She had many jobs, to keep watchful eyes on the senshi, and their various counterparts. Watching, always watching, to see when the right time would come. And she knew that soon, very soon, something was to happen. It would not be a big thing, but something, nonetheless. She was always the one watching from the shadows, always waiting for the right time to come. It seemed as though it never would. The right time, she knew, was far off. And these things took time, she of all people should have known that. But it was too early for the big events to happen. Not yet. Big things were happening, but not the ones she cared about. Discoveries and inventions were nothing to her. People were. The printing press had just been invented. But this sort of event were not the ones Sailor Pluto unfold. Rather, she watched as infants became toddlers, beccame children, became teenagers, became adults, became elderly, and died. And all the while, Sailor Pluto stayed the same age. Forever young, watching from the shadows. She had once been one of them. But that had been such a long time ago. She had once been young, had hopes and dreams, loved, and been loved. But the era of her life was long gone. Everyone she knew was dead. Buried. Not even bones, just dust. A memory of long ago. They were all around her, reminding her of the youth she had given up. That was a long time ago. Sailor Pluto let a rare tear slide down her cheek. She was remembering her life, something she had never done in all her while as the Guardian of Time. Her stone of a heart, that she had built those lonely hundreds of years, melted and she remembered watching from the shadows, all that she knew grow old, and die. Afraid, she never re-entered the stream of time. It was all too painful watching everyone die, and times pass. All the while she stayed young. She would never allow herself to feel the pain she once had. It was almost as painful remembering. But she had to let herself remember, for the people she had loved. Her life, now only a faint memory of times long ago. Who she was now, was so different from who she used to be. She used to be young, only fifteen, not fifteen thousand, or whatever it was now. She used to be young. She was only fifteen, but already big decisions were coming into her life. It was more than the simple decisions that she had faced the past years, it was what she was to do with her life. Cassandra, Princess of Pluto, had lived a life of luxury, and had enjoyed life to the fullest extent possible. She had many friends, and many suitors, all wishing for her hand in marriage. She had turned them down, of course, wanting to find her soulmate herself. Although she had been born on Pluto, she lived on the Moon of Earth, with the other princesses. She had a birthright which was to be fulfilled, but knew nothing of it. She was about to find out, and her world was to be shattered, at the very least. Queen Selene of the Moon knew that the birthrights would cause trouble among the princesses. Unfortunately, she did not know how much trouble. Selene was not looking forward to telling them their birthrights, but it had to be done, and soon. The queen was growing old, and knew that she was to die soon. But before all of that, she had to tell her daughter all that she knew, so that her daughter could tell her daughter, and so on. The other princesses were to know of their birthrights, and their future, and their children's future. She started with Pluto. "Cassandra," she told her, "you may not like what I have to say. In fact, you will not like it at all. But it must be done. Destiny must be kept intact. And you are the one to do it." Cassandra had no idea what she was talking about. "You have a birthright," Selene looked at her straight in the eyes, as symbol began to appear on her forehead. "A birthright that will last centuries, until someone else is given it." A dark green wand appeared in Selene's hands. She handed it to the frightened and clueless girl. "You are the soldier of your planet, Pluto. You are the Protector of Time, and Guardian of the Gate of Time. You harness the power of darkness, and live to keep peace throughout time, and the solar system. You are Sailor Pluto." Cassandra felt like fainting. This could not be. She was no one special, just another girl. "Cassandra, dear. You are Sailor Pluto. You have the look." Cassandra fingered her long black hair, which shone green highlights. "I am very sorry for all the trouble that may come during your life, but destiny proclaims who you are, and you are Sailor Pluto. "It was prophesied," the queen explained, "that one from each planet would have a defender of sorts. This is only the first generation of these defenders. You are the defender of your planet, Pluto." Part of Cassandra felt like crying that she wanted to keep on living the life of an ordinary girl, but most of her said that this was her destiny, and she wanted to become Sailor Pluto. She would have power, and strength, much more than she had as of now. "This," said Selene, gesturing to the wand Cassandra held, "lets you transform into Sailor Pluto, who is perhaps your true self, so that you may unleash your true power. Although you may think me wrong," she continued, "you are Sailor Pluto." Cassandra could not believe it. She took the wand, and promised to be who she was. Selene knew that she would do the right thing, and make destiny happy. But for now, Selene had other fish to fry. Such as getting her daughter away from the Prince of Earth. It was simply not allowed for princess as herself to be with one of the people of Earth, that barbaric planet. "Serenity!" The first, Cassandra knew, of many. That night, she stared at the wand. What would it hold for her? Happiness, or sad? Love, or hate? Cassandra felt that the time was right, and she felt the words forming in her mind. "Pluto Planet Power, Make-Up!" She felt Cassandra slip away, and become someone else. Sailor Pluto, said her inner voice. And it was as though she had been reborn, with her past life's memories. She knew her mission, and she knew to get started right away. She felt total peace within herself. The Guardian of Time was there. Sailor Pluto had been alive for ten years now. So had all of the other defenders of the planets. But something strange was happening. All of her friends had been aging, yet she still looked twenty. She was the only one, the other soldiers were getting older. Some had children now, and they would inherit this power. But not Cassandra. Like her Greek name signified, she could foresee the future. And there would be no heir for her. She was the only one. As time went on, and she stayed in the stream of time. She never found true love. And she always remained the same age. As her friends started to die, she buried them, awaiting her turn to face judgment. It never came. Years passed, and she was twenty years old. She was friends with her old friends' children, and their children. But the right time came, she knew, to shed her past, and leave the stream of time. She told this to the queen of the Moon. Serenity II. And so Cassandra never lived anymore. It was just Sailor Pluto. She took on some pseudonyms, every once in a while, when she came back into time, to gently adjust happenings. But Cassandra the prophetess was dead. She had died once "Pluto Planet Power, Make-Up" had been uttered. And so time had passed, and Sailor Pluto cried for her life. The life long past. She kept to her watching of life in the Solar System. She watched the descendants of her friends, and the soldiers. She watched as new civilizations flourished, and others died. She watched as a time of peace and joy came. She knew her job here. It was the Silver Millennium. Sailor Pluto watched as an evil arose from the depths of the Earth. It conquered and claimed all. Then came the Moon Kingdom's final hour. "Why, Pluto?" asked Serenity IX. She knew of the mysterious warrior's existence, as explained by her mother, and her mother before her. "Because it must happen. Destiny must be kept intact. This is the only way." Serenity knew, she knew what the future would be. Her daughter would be reborn, to vanquish this evil at a later date. "Good-bye, all," she murmured as the Illusion Silver Crystal drained away her life. And Sailor Pluto had to watch life on the planets die, with only Earth left. Sailor Pluto was always there, always watching from the shadows. Centuries of turmoil were ahead, with Sailor Pluto as the only defender. She had changed much since becoming who she was. She was not a flake anymore, but very serious, as she had to be in this job. But now, as she watched wide-eyed, a smile grew on her lips. A child was being born, somewhere in France. And a sigil appeared for one quick moment on her forehead, a sigil only descendants of the Moon Kingdom wore. Princess Serenity X was being reborn, for the first time. So Sailor Pluto watched, as the child grew up, and the other princesses were born, and they all met. Was this era where the evil would be reborn as well? For the first time in years, Sailor Pluto re-entered the time stream. She called herself Sylvie, and went on the lookout for the princess. Bunny turned around, and instantly knew who stood beside her. She cast a warm smile at the stranger. "Hello, Pluto." She smiled back. "Hello, Serenity." Serenity shook her head, "Not in this lifetime," she laughed, "I'm known as Bunny here." "Bunny then, have you met the other princesses, your guards?" She nodded. "They're over there," she pointed across the market alley, "would you like to meet them?" "No," 'Sylvie' said quickly, "They never knew who I was. Only your line knew of my eternal existence." Bunny nodded, "All right. Why are you here?" "Since you have been reborn, the evil of the Dark Kingdom might have been as well." "Oh?" Bunny arched her eyebrow. "And if that is true, then the soldiers of the planets will have to be awakened." Bunny suddenly looked very nervous. "The evil? Here?" 'Sylvie' nodded. Since they had been reborn, would the evil not have been reborn as well? And where were the Lunar Cats, Luna and Artemis? It had been prophesied that when the evil returned, so would all of the ancient people be reborn once more. But, taking a look around, 'Sylvie' noticed that there were few people from the ancient civilizations around. It just did not add up. If it was the right time, there should be more of the people from long ago around. Then, she realized sinkingly, it was not the right time. She had come out into the time stream for no reason. She had made a mistake. "Bunny," 'Sylvie' said quietly, "I made a mistake. It is not the right time. I'm sorry." "It is all right. But when will I see you again?" She did not know. "In the future. But not right now, d'accord?" "Bien." With that, Bunny walked off to meet her friends. Sailor Pluto hated herself for making such a mistake. Never again, she vowed, never again would she make such a horrible mistake. And so time passed on. She never made another mistake. The right time came, and she helped the soldiers on their mission. Then, the time came to introduce herself to them. They were battling a new enemy in Japan. It was time for her to show up in their lives once more. "I'm Meiou Setsuna." Another pseudonym, hiding who she had once been. And so more time passed. She had long since re-entered the stream of time, calling herself Setsuna Meiou, and being Sailor Pluto only occcasionally. And the time came for Serenity X to be revived, for a new millennium of peace and happiness to arrive, the Crystal Millennium. Neo Queen Serenity, not knowing that she was really Serenity X, followed in her mother's footsteps. And another ancient enemy, the Black Moon, was also defeated, with the help of the past selves of the warriors. Time passed on. Sailor Pluto felt the auras of her old friends around her, and knew that something more was to happen. And something big did happen. She had just found her successor, just like that. So she knew that her time was up. The girl was a lady in Serenity XI, Neo Princess Serenity's court. She was spunky, full of talent, the perfect choice. So Sailor Pluto approached her, and told her. She knew of her destiny, and that it had to be fulfilled. Because Sailor Pluto's time was up. The other soldiers were training their successors, so she trained hers. And the time came. One night, feeling totally and utterly happy, Sailor Pluto, formerly Princess Cassandra, died in her sleep. And so a new Sailor Pluto was born, she carried on the old Sailor Pluto's legacy. Because her name was also Cassandra. Forever young.
