As far as Usagi could gather, the group had decided to make its way to some temple or other in order to find a way to get to Endymion, as there was no way to get the blood of a Golden Hind. But Usagi couldn't really be sure, she only heard what Xena translated for her, and Xena was not a very patient translator and tended to forget to translate before giving and suggestion and switching the whole conversation. Thus, when she finally got around to translating again, Usagi had no idea what was going on. And Xena was not the type to have patience repeating and explaining things to Usagi. The funny thing was that Gabrielle was, and would have liked to help poor Usagi out, but she couldn't speak to her! Usagi didn't really notice this though. She doubted she really would have paid much attention even if Xena had translated everything for her. She was, frankly, sinking into a sudden and deep depression and even she didn't fully understand why. She just couldn't seem to help it. Everyone she was supposed to know, or was supposed to be her friend, was turning out to be evil. She was confused, not only about that, but about her feelings towards Endymion. For some reason they were very strong, and she couldn't account for the feeling. Even though Luna had told her that she had once been in love with him, Usagi didn't think that was it. She felt something more than just love towards him, but she wasn't sure what it was, and she thought that it wasn't right to be able to feel that way since she could barely remember him at all. And anyway, he was evil! He was rotten to the core! She KNEW that she shouldn't be in love with someone who was evil. So why did she feel like she could trust him completely? And then there was the feeling that the others were hiding something from her. Now she knew their communication wasn't perfect, and she knew that she was left out of a lot of things they were saying because of this. But this feeling was more than that. It was the feeling she got when Xena was translating for her and then suddenly stopped dead, and when she starting translating again, Usagi was sure she had change what she had been about to say. It was also the feeling she got when the others were having an untranslated conversation and they suddenly stopped talking and looked over at her almost guiltily. It made Usagi almost want to scream and if she hadn't had so much else on her mind, she might have. Usagi gave a soft sigh. Luna and Artemis were safely asleep at her feet, and flanking her on either side were Gabrielle and Xena. Hercules, Iolas and Autolycus were assumedly asleep in another room in the large temple. It was to be their last night spent there. Usagi sighed again. She could not sleep. She felt as if there was a large weight on top of her chest, and when she breathed it tried to suffocate her, closing up her throat. She imagined if she lay down, it might crush her under it's immense weight. She just wanted to cry. Usagi carefully got up and left the room. She did not want to wake any of the sleeping occupance. She made her way outside. The temple sported a large garden in the back, complete with a path lined with cherry blossoms, gardens of sculpted bonsai's and a beautiful fountain in the middle of the garden. There was even a whole section of the garden devoted entirely to carefully cultivated roses. They were beautiful. Usagi had never seen anything so lovely in her life, the way they were arranged and the way they fit so well with everything else in the familiar gardens. There were the kinds she loved the best, the deep, dark red ones, and then there were a few lovely yellow rose bushes planted whimsically in a undulating pattern around the red ones. White roses outlined the others in a circular fashion, with a solitary break down the middle, where a lone path made its way into the midst of the other bushes, eventually branching off respectively around the other bushes. Everything was arranged in an intricate circular pattern, weaving and dancing within its limits, until it all came to a sudden, strange halt in the very center of the circle. In the dead center of everything stood one lone rose bush, which shared it's unique coloring with no other rose in the entire garden. That bush was black. Usagi was delighted with the spectacular display. She looked greedily at the red roses which she instinctively loved so much, and which seemed to remind her so much of things forgotten. She reached out her hand to take one, but then drew back, remembering the sharp thorns on the flower that Gabrielle had given her. She heaved a soft sigh and went to sit by the fountains instead. Usagi stared blankly at the gently flowing water for a long time, thinking nothing, feeling nothing, seeing nothing. Finally she slowly and methodically took out the black rose which Endymion had given - the rose that had never wilted. Gazing down at the rose, she slowly felt herself coming back into feeling. The blackness of the rose could then have symbolized the deep despair Usagi was feeling right then. She continued to stare hard at the rose, not really noticing the hot, wet tears which flowed over her cheeks to land, gently, on the rose. "Ereht uoy era, Usagi! I've been looking all over for you!" Came the voice of Gabrielle. Usagi didn't look up. She hardly even heard Gabrielle and did not feel up to acknowledging her presence. Maybe she would just go away. No such luck. Gabrielle continued to move closer to her. "Usagi? Ho ym hsog! S'tahw gnorw era uoy truh?" Gabrielle's voice now took on a hint of panic, seeing as how Usagi's small frame hadn't moved at all except with the shudders of her weeping, She came to Usagi and sat down next to her. "Usagi..." She said softly, "T'nod yrc elttil eno, t'nod yrc. Ll'ti eb yako...." She said these words soothingly and put her arms around Usagi. At first Usagi tensed and tried to pull away, but then Gabrielle felt so warm and soothing against the frigid night air that Usagi finally relaxed into her arms. She continued to cry there for a long time while Gabrielle stroked her hair and whispered to her soothingly. Finally exhaustion crept over Usagi, and she succumbed to sleep. ----- As they both slipped off into dreamless sleep, neither of them noticed the eyes watching from the shadows. This time, though, there was not just one pair of eyes, but two. They watched silently for a long time in the dark, their eyes never meeting, until one pair turned away into the darkness and disappeared. The other pair of eyes remained fixed on the two blond haired females for the entire night, never once looking up, until the sun started to rise over the treetops, and the shadows began to yield to it's golden rays. **** She woke the next morning to find that they had stayed in that position all night. She was still wrapped up in Gabrielle's arms, though the older woman was now asleep. She tried not to disturb her, but she couldn't help it, nature was calling to her. Wriggling out of Gabrielle's grasp, she got up and ran off as Gabrielle sat up, blinking her eyes sleepily. When she was done, she realized she had dropped her rose when she was sleeping at the fountain and she went back to get it. When she was almost there she heard Gabrielle and Xena talking. "Well, where did she go, Gabrielle?" Xena asked in obvious exasperation. "I t'nod wonk, Xena, ehs tsuj nar ffo! " Gabrielle exclaimed. "Did she give any indication of where she was going?" Xena asked, calming down only slightly. "On, ehs tsuj nar ffo, dna ehs tfel siht ereh!" Gabrielle said. She must have held something up after that because Xena responded, "Her rose?! Why did she leave that here? She takes that everywhere! Do you think she's okay?" Usagi decided to go get her flower before they got any more worried about her. She ran out of the bushes to Xena and Gabrielle, who reacted with surprise at her sudden appearance. "Usagi!" Xena cried, "What happened? Are you okay?" Usagi nodded as she happily accepted her rose back and cradled it in her hands. "I had to use the bathroom," she told Xena, blushing a little. Xena gave a slight chuckle and said, "Well, next time you decide to take a bathroom break, will you kindly make sure to do it in a way that doesn't upset us all?" Usagi nodded, still blushing, and muttered, "she wouldn't understand me anyway." Xena gave a small sigh, this girl was just like a child! But she had to admit Usagi was right. "Well, you're right there... Just go in and get ready Usagi. We are going to eat breakfast and then we will go on our way. Be ready, I wouldn't want to leave you behind." Though her tone was slightly threatening, Usagi doubted that Xena would actually leave her behind. But just in case... Usagi nodded and ran into the temple, not noticing the amused looks Xena and Gabrielle were giving her behind her back. **** Luna and Artemis were talking with Usagi about what to do next. Usagi knew now, that even if they did find a way to kill Endymion or the evil Senshi, she couldn't do it. She wouldn't have been able to anyway, so was now super relieved not to be expected by her guardians to kill her former friends. As the others were in the next room discussing the pressing matters that were easier to discuss without Usagi around, Usagi and her guardians sat and discussed things that the others could never understand. Usagi herself barely understood, and she had lived them! But she did have amnesia, so maybe she wasn't really as ditzy and as incompetent as she felt at that moment. That thought sobered her. She wondered what her life had been like. What kind of person she had been. Was she a happy, bright individual, or was she sad and serious? Was she smart or was she dumb? What was her family like, did she have a brother? A sister? A *cousin*? Now where did that come from? Did she have a lot of friends other than just the Senshi, or was she limited to only them? Was she friendly? Shy? Outgoing? She really wished she could remember! "Usagi? Usagi!" Luna brought her back to the present. "Were you drifting off again?" *That airhead,* Luna thought. "Ummmm. Sorry Luna. I was just trying to remember a few things." "You really need to concentrate better Usagi! Now, we need to find a way to get to Endymion before they do. Maybe if we could just get him to remember.... Then he'd be on our side. And uhhh..." Luna trailed off as she caught sight of Xena standing in the doorway. She silently started to panic. How much of that had she heard? But apparently Xena hadn't heard her talking. She said, "Are you talking to those cats again Usagi? Honestly! You'd think they could talk" (A bead of sweat about the size of Texas ran down Luna's cheek at that, but Xena didn't seem to notice that either.) "Come on Usagi, we're leaving. Now." ***** Two hours later they were still trekking towards their destination, wherever that may be. Usagi doubted she would have known even if she had known. (Don't even TRY to think about that one ;) Everyone was a little hot and tired, so they all took a break by a nearby stream. Usagi was especially tired, as she not only had no experience in long treks like these, but she also had to carry her supplies and her two cats. (Gabrielle had firmly refused to carry one of them, and the guys were carrying most of the heavy stuff so they couldn't, and Usagi didn't even TRY to ask Xena.) They had only been able to sit there for a few moments when out of the brush suddenly came two of those creatures who had attacked before. (Denizens if you hadn't already guessed.) They gave a horribly angry snarl and immediately started to attack, striking first at Usagi, who was undecidedly the closest to them. Xena gasped and was just barely able to get Usagi and her cats out of the way of the blast, before another came right back at her. Xena leaped up and joined the others in attacking the things. "Get out of here, Usagi! Run and hide, just like you did before, but be careful of the trees," Xena yelled at Usagi while countering yet another blast from the Denizens. Usagi darted away, with Luna and Artemis following her. As soon as she thought she was safe, she stopped to catch her breath. "Transform, Usagi!" Artemis yelled at her. "Transform into Sailor Moon, and HURRY!" Usagi did as she was told and as soon as she had done so, turned on her heel and ran back to the fight, which now sported four live Denizens, and one dead one. ---- Endymion watched in satisfaction. Perfect. They were resting now, maybe he could catch them off guard and rid himself of those nuisances. He sent his Denizens out after them and looked on with sick pleasure. The only thing he'd regret about this was that he'd have to kill off that girl.... but he wouldn't dwell on that just now. He watched the fight start, just barely keeping himself in check as the Denizens attacked the girl. Fortunately, she got away unharmed. *Fortunately?* He watched the warrior, Xena, shout something at the girl, and then the girl turned around and ran. Endymion lost interest in the fight then and there. He followed the girl carefully, though he needn't have worried. She didn't go far. She stopped to catch her breath, and then, incredibly, her cat talked. Her CAT talked? "Transform, Usagi! Transform into Sailor Moon, and HURRY!" Then, before Endymion could collect his wits, the girl, Usagi, held her hand to the sky and shouted: Moon Eternal Power, Make Up! And then she was off and running. *So,* thought Endymion, *She is Sailor Moon, that interfearer from last time!* His mind greedily drank in this information. Then, *Her name is Usagi - No, Usako* Usako? Where had that come from? He tried to shake the name away, but it clung to him, reverberating around him, through him. Usako... Usako... Usako... And then, in a flash, everything came back to him. Everything. All of his memories past and present came back to him in one single moment. He gasped in immense pain, and clutched his stomach, while also trying to keep his reeling head from detaching from his body. He was in so much pain that he could no longer keep his balance on the treetop. With a grunt of immense pain, he fell to the ground - right in front of the cats. The cats both jumped away startled at this. They were about to take cover when they saw how much pain he was in. They carefully approached and looked down at him, watching him writhe in agony. Then suddenly, he stopped, and the pain seemed to be over. Opening his eyes, he squinted hazily at the two cats in front of him. They were looking down at him with expressions, which mixed concern for his condition, but also fear of him. He gave a soft groan, and rolled off of his side to his back, keeping his eyes on the two cautious cats. "Well, Luna, Artemis, to what do I owe this pleasure?" He said, shocking the cats into a stupor. **** The fight was not going very well. The group had managed to kill off one of the Denizens, but they had brought in reinforcements and the five warriors were barely able to hold off attacks the likes of which they had never seen before. Sailor Moon had perched herself in a crevice of a tree when she had first arrived, surveying her situation. But soon it became clear that she was desperately needed and she jumped from the hidden crevice, to a large branch whose leaves' shadows hid her face from view. She shouted he speech in the loudest voice she could muster. "For love and Justice, the Sailor Suit Beautiful fighter, Sailor Moon!" At her words, the fighting stopped dead and everyone looked up in awe. (Awwwwww. Argh! NO. I'm just in a weird mood today, Eike, just ignore this okay? ;) Hercules decided to take advantage of this lull in the fighting and bashed two of the Denizens against a tree, crushing one. From there the fight erupted ten fold, almost into chaos. Sailor Moon jumped into the foray attacking furiously with her Honeymoon attack, but even with her help, they were just holing their own. Then suddenly, back away from an attacking Denizen, Sailor Moon tripped over a protruding root and fell flat on her back. The Denizen towered over her with an evil gleam in his eyes. **** "Well?" Endymion prompted. "Cat got your tongue?" "How did you know we talk? And how did you get our names, Endymion?" "Luna, I remember. I remember everything. Everything...." his voice trailed off and he stared pensively out into space. "How did you get your memory back, Mamoru-san?" Artemis asked him. "I... I had just sent the Denizens to attack Xena and Hercules when I saw Usako turn and run into the forest. I didn't know why at the time, but I had been keeping an eye on her, I guess. I felt some sort of connection to her that I didn't like." He looked pensive for a moment. "Now I understand, though," he said in a faraway voice, then he seemed to snap back to reality. "But anyway I followed her and heard you talk to her, Artemis. Then she transformed and suddenly I felt sick all over and I hurt and everything came back to me at once." "Wow." Artemis commented intelligently. "Mamoru-san, transform into Tuxedo Kamen, Sailor Moon is out there fighting all alone!" Luna said in a worried voice. Endymion groaned. "I doubt if I'd be any help out there, Luna." Suddenly they heard a desperate scream. "Usako!" Endymion said, pain written all over his face. He didn't hesitate a moment longer. He transformed into Tuxedo Kamen and carefully made his way towards the fight. He got there just in time to see Sailor Moon lying on the ground, a Denizen about to strike her. Without even thinking about it, Kamen had pulled out a rose and thrown it into the creature's arm. The creature gave a roar and looked over his shoulder at Kamen. "Evil creatures out to destroy what is good, I Tuxedo Kamen will put an end to you!" Then, before the creature could react, he threw a barrage of roses at the Denizen, killing it instantly as they all impacted on its skin. "Tuxedo Kamen?!" Sailor Moon cried with a mixture of relief and confusion. Who was this guy? Kamen jumped from his position and landed gently next to Sailor Moon. "Are you okay?" he asked her. Sailor Moon nodded mutely and Kamen helped her to her feet. Then they joined the battle, and together with the others, defeated the Denizens. Then Tuxedo Kamen and Sailor Moon disappeared without a trace. **** When they got back to the clearing, Usagi immediately detransformed demanding, "who?" Then Kamen detransformed into Mamoru and grinned at her. "Hello Usako!" Usagi just stared at him with uncomprehending eyes. Then, "Endymion?" "Well, yes, that too, but Usako..." Mamoru said a little taken aback. "Why do you call me Usako? That's not my name...." She trailed off at the look in his eye. "Usako, you don't need to hide yourself. It's me, Mamoru. I... I remember everything." He was starting to get worried. Why was she acting this way? "It's true, Usagi-chan. He remembers everything, he is now your Mamo-chan." Luna came to his rescue. "He's my... what? That name..." "Usagi I thought we talked about this! Weren't you listening?" Luna's voice was slightly exasperated. "I was, Luna, but you can't expect me to remember everything!" Usagi had the beginnings of tears in her eyes, and she looked as if she was going to do her forgotten characteristic wail. Something in Mamoru must have triggered a remembrance of some of her more childish traits. Mamoru was looking at them in confusion. "What's going on here?" Usagi turned to him. "I'm sorry Endymio... uhhh... Mamo-chan. You may have your memory back, but I don't have mine yet." Tears were definitely threatening to spill now. Mamoru gaped at her in confusion. "Your memory? But you're still good...." In the distance they heard Xena's voice call out, "Usagi! Usagi!" The others were starting to take up the call too, and they were getting closer. "Drat, we need more time to talk this out," murmured Mamoru, looking down at Usagi, who looked about ready to bolt back to Xena. Instantly he knew what he had to do. He took a hold of Usagi's arm forcing her to look up at him. He looked into her eyes gravelly. "Usako, we need to talk some more, and I don't think your friends will accept me. And I have to keep up my image as Endymion the evil lord for awhile. I need you to come with me, and I want you to play along with me when your friends find us. Will you do this?" She looked hesitant. "Do you trust me?" He whispered. She gazed into his eyes a moment longer and then nodded. He smiled, "Good." Then, as the group of worried travelers got close, he transformed into Endymion and grabbed Usagi's arms, forcing them gently behind her back, careful not to hurt her. "You have to pretend to struggle" he whispered in her ear as the others came through the brush and stopped dead at the sight of them. She nodded, and started to struggle within his grasp. Xena gasped and stepped forward. "Usagi!" "Quiet!" Endymion barked at all of them. He sneered, evilly. "So, I have your little friend. Of how much value is she to you?" >From the looks on their faces, they couldn't understand a word he was saying, the message seemed to get across clearly enough. Usagi longed to tell them she was all right and he wouldn't hurt her, but she had to play along with Endy... Mamoru's plan. Usagi suddenly wondered how good of an actress she was. She decided to ham it up just a little. Xena stepped forward again threateningly, "Let her go, you bastard!" Endymion didn't understand her words, but he understood her protective tone. So, his little Odango had managed to gather protectors even in this strange world. He barely kept himself from smiling as he growled dangerously, "Take one more step and she dies!" And to emphasize his point he squeezed Usagi arms back tighter in a way that could never hurt her, but sure looked like it might. It helped that feeling the added pressure to her arms, Usagi tightened her face in mock pain. That effect added nicely. Xena stepped back, but did not let down her furious guard. "Girl, translate this!" He barked at Usagi. She complied, telling Xena every word he said in a trembling voice. "How much do you value this girl? Is she important to you?" As Usagi translated, Xena's face darkened furiously. Endymion smiled. "Ah, I thought so. Well if you ever want to see her alive again, you will come and find me! And believe me, it will not be easy!" He started to laugh maniacally, and as soon as his last words had been uttered from Usagi's mouth, he transported himself, Usagi, and the two cats out of there, leaving behind only Usagi's cherished black rose, now turned to a brilliant red.
