"Ewwww! Get away from me! You monster!" The little girl screamed. The words pierced into Serena's heart like a thousand knives. For a moment, Serena was speechless. She tried in vain to figure out what must have happened. Than finally she realized. The little girl must have seen her scar. A lump formed in Serena's throat. Am I really that scary? She asked herself. "I'm a good person, you know." She said at last and tried to move closer. The little girl screamed. "No, you're not! You've got a scar! You're a monster! Mummy says only monsters have scars!" Serena left the room without saying anything. She knew she should have finished her rounds first, but she couldn't. And it was only than, did Serena realize how hard living in today's society going to be. Walking down the dimly lit corridors of the hospital that night, Serena noticed one room still alit with light. It was Elizabeth's room. Serena knew she shouldn't, it would only hurt her more but she had to. She had to get nearer to what had been her past. "I'm glad you're alright, Elizabeth." A male voice said. Suddenly, it struck Serena that the voice was strangely familiar, like she's heard it somewhere before. "When I got your phone call today, I was so worried that something had happened to you." "Oh come on. I'll be all right. You should have known better than to worry about me. I told you, I'll fight to the end. Remember?" "I know you will, Elizabeth. You were always the strongest woman I had ever met." The male voice said. No. It can't be. Serena's mouth parted, as she recognized the voice. It was the voice she heard every morning. The voice that had comforted her time and time again when she had wept her heart out. Serena's hands shooked. It couldn't be. Please don't let it be. Please. Serena screamed inside. Oh god, please don't let it be Darien! Please, not Darien! Don't let her take him away from me too! Serena never thought anyone would understand her. At the hospital everyone was so serious and solemn. They never seemed to understand that life was about being happy. It was about taking risks. "It's the greatest risk of all, to not risk at all" right? That's was what she had believed ever since she had waken up from her coma. Serena didn't know what she believed in before that. Everything that had happened before she lost her memory had been like a dream. An impossible nightmare. Yet now they were returning. She had been foolish to think that the past would stay forever hidden. Life just doesn't work like that. When she had woken up totally lost to her memory. Serena has had to learn to live again, to experience life as a newborn infant taking her first breath. Than why was god being so unfair? Why did she have to pretend that everything was perfectly fine, when underneath everything was wrong! Why had he given her a chance to forget and than bring Elizabeth back into her life again? Logic told Serena that it wasn't Elizabeth's fault that her life had turned out the way it had. But in her heart, Serena just couldn't bring herself to forget. If it hadn't been for Elizabeth's existence than she might had been happy, if it hadn't been for Elizabeth than she might had been loved, if it hadn't been for Elizabeth than Darien would have loved-loved someone else! "Darien." Serena sobbed silently as tears spilled over her lashes and onto her cheeks. "Why are you like the rest of them, Darien? Why?" Her lips trembled "Why doesn't anyone care about me? Why doesn't anybody care? Aren't I human too?" Serena wanted to scream, but knew she couldn't. Finally her heart hardened. Oh, why do I care anyway! Let her take him! I don't need anyone! Serena decided. It didn't matter now anyway. Serena tried to remind herself. I could forget I ever saw her and continue on with my life. The past needs never to surface again. What she had learnt were from her dreams anyway. Surely, it would be easy to forget. Somehow, Serena felt more satisfied that way, or did she? Taking a beer out from the fridge, Serena gulped it down, never once tasting its bitterness as it ran down her throat. When Darien came home from the hospital that night, he found her there, lying on the sofa; four empty cans of beer beside her. She's being crying. Darien realized. Sighing, he lifted her up off the sofa and carried Serena into her room. "Oh Serena. If only you knew how sorry I am for putting you through all this pain." He whispered softly, as he stared down at the sleeping figure of Serena infront of him. She was an angel. Her beauty had always came from her heart, not from her face. Serena was a big at heart, Darien knew. But what he had done to her one year ago was inevitable. The only thing he could do now was pay her back, bit by bit. Once someone had told him that when you talk to a person while they were unconscious. They will still hear you subconsciously. Darien knew, this was a chance he could not let go of. "Listen to me Serena. I'm sorry. I'm sorry for making you lose your memory. I'm sorry for making you live your life without your family. I'm sorry for taking your past away from you. I'm sorry." He sighed, and fingered Serena's scar gently. It felt rough against her fingers, but he didn't care. Even on Serena, it shone like heaven's light on a rainy day. Suddenly, Serena grabbed his hands and for a second, Darien thought she had woken up and had heard what he said, but than he realized that she was talking in her sleep. "Oh Darien. Why are you doing this to me? Why?" Darien watched as she cried out his name, and for a second an uneasy feeling crept into his mind. Had she heard anything? "Why are you just like the rest of them?" Serena cried as tears form at the corner of her eyes, and trickle down her cheeks again. Bending down, Darien wiped them away. "Goodnight, Serena." He said quickly. He couldn't bear to listen any longer. He left the room with Serena's words still fresh in his mind. Oh Darien. Why are you doing this to me? Why? Why are you just like the rest of them? ****************************************************************************** "But doctor Hilton! I can't possibly do that operation!" Raye yelled. A couple of heads turn in their direction. Breathing hard, Raye struggled to stay calm. Serena had been right, the heads had called her that very day and had officially informed her that she was to do the operation on Scott. "Doctor Casey, you may be one of the youngest doctors in this hospital but I can assure you, you are one of our very bests. You are totally capable of doing that operation." Doctor Hilton said. He was a tall, middle-aged man who always had an air of confidence about him, Raye had admired his reliance right away. He was the kind of doctor she'd like to be one day. To Raye, he was like a second father. Someone she looked up to, and she hated disappointing him like this, but she just couldn't possibly bring herself to obey him this time. Raye shook her head "No. It's not that. But well, my relationship with Scott is somewhat different, and I just can't bring myself to operate on him." Raye explained. Doctor Hilton stared at her "You're not having that kind of relationship with him, are you? You know that kind of behavior is absolutely unacceptable in the hospital. I would hate to see you ruin your reputation over something like that." He said "No. No. No, of course not! You've got it all wrong! It's just that, ummm-" Raye stuttered. She blushed a deep crimson red. Doctor Hilton sighed. "And-you do who he's parents are, don't you?" Raye frowned "His parents? Well no, I've never seen them before." "I wouldn't be very surprised if you haven't seen them. They are very busy. His father is after all, the President of Japan." Doctor Hilton said. Raye's mouth dropped open. "What?" Doctor Hilton sighed heavily "Not much people in this hospital know that fact. So Raye, I'm assured that the secret is safe with you." "Yes. Yes. Yes. Doctor Hilton. But-" Raye spluttered. Doctor Hilton held out his hands. "Well than Raye, if you can't tell me A suitable explanation to why you can't operate on Scott, than I guess that's it than. And I'm sure he's parents will reward you grandly if the operation was successful. The operation is in two days. I expect you at my office tomorrow afternoon to get all the info. Good luck Raye." He said over his shoulders and walked off. Raye watched in shock as Doctor Hilton departed. The truth had not yet sank in. Scott's the son of the Prime Minister! It was absolutely impossible. But even as Raye absorbed in the full impact of the news, she was making her way up to intensive care. "Wake up Scott." She said when she reached his bed. "Come on. Open your eyes. I can't do this! You know I can't!" Raye whispered. In the background, the life monitor beeped steadily. **************************************************************************** "Hey Liz." Darien grinned as he walked into the hospital room. It was very early in the morning, but coming by to visit Elizabeth before he went to work every morning was becoming a routine. This morning, she was still asleep. Her face, pale against the whiteness of the pillow. She looked younger than he remembered of her, and Darien had to wonder if everyone looked younger when they were asleep. Darien smiled, as the image of Serena's sleeping form floated into his mind. Her posture had been so carefree and juvenile. Just like a pale white flake of snow on a winter's night. Elizabeth was different, her posture was exhausted but she lay regal and ripen, like the full blossom of a beautiful red spring's rose. Looking down at Elizabeth, he noticed how ashen she seemed. Her illness had taken their toll on her. He reached out to touch her cheeks. They were cold. She's so beautiful. Darien had never dreamed he'd feel this way about anyone, he never thought he would allow himself to. When Sarah's died in the car accident, along with his parents, he never thought he would ever love again, he use to think that love was highly overrated, that dreams were just for sentimental fools. But he'd been wrong, because there was love still alive in this world. He bent down to kiss her softly on the apple of her cheeks. "Darien." Darien jerked his head back. "Elizabeth! You're awake!" He's heart began to race furiously between his breastbones. She smiled up at him "I've been awake for a long time." She said softly. "Listen Eliz-" Darien tried to explain. Elizabeth smiled and put a hand to his lips "Shhh-I understand." They stared at each other and the silence grew. Suddenly, Elizabeth reached out and pulled Darien close to her. His heart still pounding furiously, Darien felt the soft touch of Elizabeth's lips as it touched his. Closing his eyes, Darien 's heart smiled as Elizabeth's tongue moved inside his mouth. "I love you, Darien." Elizabeth whispered, drawing back from their kiss. Darien smiled. "I love you too" He touched her face tenderly and marveled silently at her beauty. It wasn't only his beauty that had attracted him to her though. It was her air of confidence, that aura of pride surrounding her that seems to radiate so awe-inspiringly. "Forever and ever. I promise you that. No one will ever take your place in my heart." He whispered softly. "And after I die?" She searched his eyes as she spoke. Darien shook his head "You're not going to die, Elizabeth. Listen to me. You're going take care of yourself and live on. For me." Elizabeth looked away. "But if? Everyone has to die one day, Darien. And I will be no different." She said slowly. "There's only one place in my heart Elizabeth. And it's for you." Darien said, looking down at Elizabeth's worried face. Elizabeth looked at him "This is scaring me." She said softly. "I-" she stopped. "I've never felt this way about anyone before." Darien smiled. "Than try it." She laughed suddenly "This is reminding me of movies." Darien grinned, remembering Serena and her movies. "We're going to last a lot longer than the movies Elizabeth. I can assure you." He said laughing. ************************************************************************* "I cannot believe what that guy just did." Raye fumed. She'd just came back from Doctor Hilton's with Scott's medical history tucked safely in a corner of her desk, and now came the morning talk with Serena. "Do you know what he did! He is such a sexiest pig! Oh my god, what pisses me off most about him is that, he is always going, 'after you miss'. I mean, it's the 21st century! Women are no longer to be treated as the weaker race. It's not like we no longer have the strength to open a stupid door!" she paused to take a breath "I mean! Hello! Was he trying to discriminate me or something! And than you know what he did after that! He tried to let me go on the train first!" Raye stopped and realized that Serena wasn't paying attention to her. She worried about Serena, she didn't seem like herself anymore. Ever since that day when Raye had found out the true secret of Serena's past. The barrier between her and Serena seemed to have disintegrated. They weren't strangers anymore. Not acquaintances either. They were friends. "Serena are you listening?" Serena looked up from her lap. It had been days, since Serena last saw Elizabeth. She had avoided her part of the hospital deliberately, trying her best to forget her dreams and her past. It hadn't been an easy task. Serena knew, she wasn't a person who forgets easily. Especially if it had been significant to her, but she had to try. For her sake, as well as for Elizabeth's. She had thought, and thought and thought after that night and finally Serena realized. She didn't want to live with all those hate and memories in her heart. She had made a vow to herself she was going to start a new life, and she had to keep that promise. "Yeah sure." "Are you alright? You look like there's something troubling you." Raye was concerned. She moved closer to Serena. Serena forced a smile 'No, I'm all right. Really I am." She looked away. "Sure? Come on, sadness is written all over your face. You can trust me, don't bottle it up inside. You'll feel better if you let it out." "Really. I'm okay." Serena replied in short sentences. Somehow, she couldn't find the strength to talk. Raye sighed impatiently "Yeah sure. And I'm Taylor Hanson!" Serena groaned out loud "God, Raye. Would you stop it! I'm all right, really I am!" Raye grew concerned. She really cared about Serena. They were after all, friends. She wouldn't want her unhappy for all the rice in china. "Really Serena. What's wrong? You can tell me. You know you'll feel a lot better that way." Serena laughed bitterly "You know, Raye. Sometimes, the best thing we're at is to deceive ourselves." A lump had come into her throat. Raye was speechless. What can she say to that? Gently, she put a hand on Serena's shoulder and patted her. Looking back at Raye, Serena's lips trembled, tears gathered at the corner of her eyes, than her face crumbled and she fell into Raye's arms. "I just don't know what to do." She wept "What am I going to do, Raye?" "O-oh." Raye looked down in bewilderment at the sobbing form on Serena in her arms. "Come on, Serena. I thought the thing you were best at was smiling. What happened to the Serena I knew?" Serena shook her head "No, Raye. You don't understand." Her voice choked On her tears. "Do you know how hard it is to pretend everything was okay when in reality, everything was totally wrong? Do you know how hard it is to live a life where you know, no one will understand or care? Do you know how hard it is for me to live my life like a scarecrow? I don't want to live like that anymore!" "Oh Serena." Raye didn't know what else to say besides that. SErena shook her head "You don't have to say anything, Raye. I'll be all right. There's always a tomorrow, right? I'll be waiting for that day." Than, wiping the tears away from her cheeks. She got up and took a step towards the door. "Just remember Serena. If you have a problem, don't hide from it. Everything that has a beginning has an end. There will never be a conclusion from what is true to your heart if you run away from it." Raye said suddenly. "There's no point in lying to yourself. You were right, the best things we're at are to deceive ourselves. Let's not let yourself make the same mistake again." Serena looked around. Raye's words have strucked a chord in her. "I just don't know what to do anymore, Raye." She said, fresh tears in her eyes. "God, guide me." Than, wiping the tears away from her eyes, she left. *************************************************************************** Serena held her head down, to stop people from seeing the traces of tears on her face as she made her way slowly back towards the front section of the hospital. The section where Elizabeth was. Tears blinded her eyes, so she couldn't see probably. Her footsteps, ponderous as her heart echoed softly in the quite late night traffic of the hospital. Ever since she had woken up from her coma, Elizabeth had lived only in her dreams and memory. She had been the extra dimension, Serena had never dared venture into, because she knew that the more she found out of her past, the more it will cost her. Yet now, her dreams had become the reality she had repelled from. How will I face the world ever again? Serena asked herself. Still and all, Raye's words had made her think. Will everything really be over if she never saw Elizabeth again? Is that the way of life? Serena didn't know. Life was too hard to live. Life had been so much simpler a few days ago. A return to happier times. SErena smiled to herself. That would have been nice. Yet now, nothing will ever be the same again. Serena was just about to turn into the main section of the building, when a figure slammed right into her. Uttering a cry of surprise, Serena fell to the ground. Before she could bring herself back to focus. A bloody hand suddenly appeared infront of her face. Serena shrieked and backed away. "Oh my-" Serena began, as she saw the person in front of her. It was a middle-aged man. His hand, covered in blood was trying desperately to hold in the blood pumping through a hole in his chest as he struggled to suck in breath after breath. Serena rushed to his side. "Oh my god, are you alright?" Serena gasped. He struggled to speak "G-gun.." he whispered in her ear "Guy with a g-gun near the recovery wards-" The last breath left him and he laid still. He's dead. Serena realized. Than a new horror crossed her mind. Elizabeth! Elizabeth was in that section of the hospital! What if? Serena didn't think twice. She began to run. At that moment, SErena didn't care if it was Elizabeth's existence that had made her past a living hell, she didn't care if everyone loved Elizabeth and not her. She just ran. Perhaps, she was deceiving herself again. But Serena knew she couldn't treason her reason for being a human by being a coward. She had to go, and see if Elizabeth was all right. Serena rounded the last corner, and than she was there. The scene, which beheld her eyes, took her breath away. That whole section of the hospital was a mess. People were fleeing from the scene, blood was everywhere and the children were crying. "Call the police, someone!" Someone was yelling. But no one heard. Everyone was screaming, but she hadn't heard guns yet. Perhaps the man had been wrong. Perhaps there weren't any guns?perhaps no one had to die. And where was Elizabeth? She must still be in her room. But she wasn't. Serena saw her than. Elizabeth lay on the ground, just a few feet away from her. There was blood all over her, but Serena wasn't sure if it was her own blood, or the blood of someone else's. Someone pushed past her than, and that forced Serena out of her trance. She had to act fast. Without thinking twice, Serena ran over to where Elizabeth lay and tried to bring her back on her feet. "Wake up, Elizabeth." Serena whispered frantically. But Elizabeth didn't wake up and she was too heavy for Serena to carry. Than she saw him. The man with the gun. It was Julian. One of her AIDS patient. She'd looked after him once when he'd been in hospital because of a lung infection. He was dressed in a patient's clothing and held a small pistol in his hand. SErena noticed immediately that Julian must be very ill. He's skin was very pale and he coughed constantly. But that didn't stop him from shooting at anyone he wanted. It was strange, but he didn't seem to be shooting randomly, he seemed to be picking his victims. Women mostly. Pregnant women, nurses and doctors. Serena grew frantic than. She was terrified. He could hit her easily from this distance. Serena didn't want to die. But how can she leave Elizabeth here? But before she could decide. There were more shouts, and the cops arrived. Serena lifted her head to see if Darien were among them. He was and he was searching for someone. "Darien!" SErena began to shout. Hearing her voice, Darien spun around and saw Serena. His eyes grew wide with shock. "SErena! Get the hell out of here!" he was shouting. "Eliz-" Serena began to shout. Than she stopped. She had been about to shout Elizabeth. But it didn't matter anymore. Darien had seen her already, and was now running towards her fallen body. -------------End of Chapter 4-------------------------------------------------- Okay, the big thing i promised is happening already.
