Said the little girl. Serena sighed and looked down at the small face of the little girl in front of her. It was the little girl who had called her a monster just a few weeks ago and yet now, monster or not. Serena was trying her best to make the little girl feel just that teeny bit more courageous. The little girl's name was Catherine and from the moment, Serena heard of her story, all she'd wanted to do was to forget their differences and try her best to do what she felt was right. Catherine was eight; she hated school, hated her parents, and hated life. Her problem? Her problem was AIDS. Something that she had inherited from her parents when she was just from her parents when she was just a little fetus, growing in her mum's tummy. Yet god had not been kind to this little girl. In her early years, Catherine had tried and tried and tried to make sense of why no one was allowed to play over at her house, why she was always secluded in a hospital when other children could enjoy the sunshine outside or why she'd had to live in her own dream of make-believe characters when she wanted a whole world of real friends. And than she had stopped dream- stopped hoping all together. Because she had lost faith in what her future would bring. And to Serena that had been the greatest tragedy. To have no hope at all. Yet Serena couldn't blame her, thinking about it, she could hardly bring herself to imagine how Catherine could have coped with such a life. To wake up each morning, knowing that whatever tomorrow brings her, the future would still remain as bleak. "The greatest tragedy of all was to have no hope." Right? That was what Serena wanted to live by; yet sometimes just holding on could prove as one of life's hardest mission. And for once, Serena had to admire the girl. She was so young and yet she had gone through a life, most people would never experience. "Look, Catherine." Serena said at last. She was careful to keep her scar hidden underneath her mass of hair. However hard she tried to forget, Serena could help but fee conscious of her scar. "Sometimes, being afraid is okay. It's part of our world as a human being." Catherine shook her head vigorously "But I don't want to be a coward." She whispered. Serena smiled and stroked Catherine's s hair gently willing her to fall asleep soon and forget about all these problems that were only meant for grown ups. "You're not a coward, Catherine. There are no cowards at this very moment in this world, because anyone who has the strength to live is a hero. Because we had chosen what we thought was right." Serena said softly. Catherine looked up at her with shining eyes. "I'm still afraid though. Serena-" she looked up at Serena. "Yes?" "Maybe I'll die tomorrow in the operation-maybe I'll die afraid." Her voice trailed off. Serena felt tears prick in her eyes. What had Catherine done to ever deserve this? She shook her head. "Oh sweetie, sometimes being courageous or brave doesn't mean the person is totally fearless. Whatever happens, there will always be fear alive in this world. What is more important is that, the person is able to live with the fear inside her and still fight for what she thought was right. It's all in the heart Catherine. If you believe you can live, than god can't take you away." She said. Serena sighed again and for an interminable moment, neither Serena nor Catherine could think of anything to say to each other. Looking at Catherine through her loving eyes, Serena could see all those years of pain lift away and for an instant, she could almost bring herself to believe that Catherine was just a normal little girl. "I'm sorry I called you a monster, Serena." Catherine said suddenly, looking up at Serena through her pale green eyes. "You're not a monster at all. I think you're the most beautiful nurse I have ever seen. You made me happy." Serena gave a half smile but inside she was satisfied, just knowing that she had made someone happy was all the reassuring she needed. And as Catherine drifted off into her own little dream kingdom, Serena was determined that she would face Darien. ************************************************************************** When Serena found Darien's room at last, the lights were turned off and Elizabeth was just leaving to head home. She stayed late these nights when Darien was in the hospital. Every time Serena had dared herself to get a glimpse of Darien's condition, she'll see Elizabeth there by his side and they had been laughing. Serena rarely sees Darien smile and yet now, Elizabeth had made him laugh, had made him happy and that was beyond anything Serena could do. "He's been looking for you." Elizabeth said now as she saw Serena approaching her. Serena nodded but inside her heart was beating faster than she thought her heart was capable of. "How is he?" Elizabeth smiled for once. "I'd say he'll be out of here in a few days." She said. Serena nodded "Yeah, I wouldn't want him to lose his job because of me." Serena moved toward the doorknob. "He's asleep, Serena." Serena stopped, held back by Elizabeth's words. She didn't want me to go in. Serena realised. "Okay." She said finally. "I'll leave." But she didn't move. She was still there when Elizabeth left the hospital. Serena didn't go in to Darien's room though. What Elizabeth said had shaken her up. It made her think that perhaps nothing was going to turn out, as she wanted it to. Sighing, she slumped down on the bench outside Darien's room and listened as the clock ticked overhead, when the clock struck two in the morning, the door opened behind her and Darien stepped out. "Serena! You came!" He exclaimed. Serena stood up to face him. "Shh. Darien, this is a hospital." But she smiled. IT had been four days since she'd last seen him. "Why didn't you come in before and wake me up?" he asked and they both sat down on side by side on the bench. Serena thought about Elizabeth's words but she would never say them. Instead she said, "You were asleep, I didn't want to bother you." "Where have you been?" He whispered softly. "I was expecting a visit from you." Serena smiled slowly but she didn't answer his question. "Thank you for saving my life again, Darien." She said softly. He sighed. "Don't thank me Serena. It was my job." "Thank you." "I just said not to thank me!" Darien said but he was grinning. "What are you doing here so late?" Serena rolled her eyes. "I'm a nurse, Darien. I'm on a night shift." She was lying of course, but she didn't want him to know that she had stayed behind waiting for him. "Are you happy with Elizabeth?" she asked all of a sudden. Darien smiled. "To tell you the truth, Serena. She's the most wonderful thing, god had ever given me." She said Serena nodded her head. She tried to understand, really she did. But sometimes just understanding could be a painful job. She wanted to love Elizabeth as a sister and yet Serena wasn't a person who loved easily. ************************************************************************* "Oh my god Scott. Would you just stop talking for once while I check your wound!" Raye exclaimed impatiently as she struggled to make sure that Scottt had recovered nicely and at the same time try to ignored his beautiful doctors. "Sorry, Beautiful." He said and grinned up at her. In spite of herself, Raye blushed and she hated that. She hated the fact that Scottt was among the few people who could make her blush, leaving her completely speechless. "There." Raye said and secured the bandaged on again after she'd check his scar. "You'll be okay now, Scott." He shrugged carelessly as though the operation hadn't really meant anything to him at all. "I suppose." You don't seem very eager to get out of the hospital." Raye said. She pulled a chair over to Scott's bed and sat down. Scott looked away and suddenly it struck Raye that she'd been foolish to not notice this side him. The side that was so different from the mask he displayed to the whole world. "What's there to go home to." He said quietly, than he turned back to Raye and grinned. "Besides, with a beautiful woman like you as my doctor?" Raye was silent. Her mind began to fill with images of what Scott's life would have been like and suddenly an empty void filled her mind. Trying to ignore the remark, Raye forced a smile. "I'm sure your home wasn't that bad." Scott laughed bitterly and shook his head "Material wealth doesn't necessarily mean a person is happy." "You're happy, aren't you?" Raye asked. He looked down at his feet. "I try to be." He said, trying to avoid Raye's piercing stare. Raye sighed "Come one, life isn't as bad as it seems." Scott laughed "No. It's not, its worst." He took a deep breath and suddenly found himself telling Raye the story of his life. "You'd think that having so much power and money in your life is the biggest treasure anyone could dream of. But not for me. Have you ever got the feeling that the bigger the house, the loonier you get? Well that's how I feel." "But surely." Raye wanted to say. She had watched the expressions on Scott's face change and realized for the first time that everyone-no matter who you were, had a secret buried deep down in their hearts. He stopped her with his hands and started talking again. "I was sent to the poshest school you'd ever find. But I didn't give a damn about my future. My dad wanted me to be a politician. I didn't give him that satisfaction." A smile crossed his face. " Anyhow, I flunked high school and than-this" he motioned to his bandaged head "Came along." He paused. "I thought it was God's gift to me. To let me die and start again." Raye shook her head. She weren't use to him talking in such a way. She weren't used to Scott lacking the spark of confidence he always had. "But then, you came along..." Raye blinked. Huh? She looked up and stared into Scottt's dark eyes. "You gave me a chance to live again-Raye." It was the first time he'd called her by her real name. Raye blushed "Well?" It was my job. She wanted to say but somehow the words wouldn't come out of her mouth and she was speechless. Scott shook his head "You don't have to say anything Raye." Raye nodded. "Where are you going to go from here?" Scott closed his eyes for a long time, seemingly in deep thoughts about his road ahead. "I'll paint." He said at last. Raye was surprised. "You're a painter?" "I enjoy art." Raye laughed. "Hard to believe." He grinned. ********************************************************************** It was 7 days after Darien left the hospital for the comfort of his own flat that he finally realized that Serena was avoiding him. He was often busy at the station as was Serena and her shifts at the hospital. Yet before the incident at the hospital, they'd always had time to talk to each other, no matter how busy they were. And as time past, Darien had come to terms that Serena and him had gradually became the best of friends. Whenever he had free time though, he'd spent the majority of his times with Elizabeth. She was a remarkable woman, not like anyone he'd ever known before. There was a vast intensity within those sad eyes, and matureness inside the deep pounding of her weakening heart. Together, they had spent many pondering hours of the past week taking long strolls by the nearby coast and when Elizabeth was tired, as she often was than they'd rest under the arbour of a nearby tree. And it was than that they would talk; Darien of his past and Elizabeth of what she dreamt of in the future. She was a passionate woman; a brave woman and one that Darien admired. In those lone hours together, their love had bonded to a somewhat deeper stage. Yet Serena had remained in his heart through the essence of their duo walks, one week could be a very long time. That night, he waited for Serena to come home from her late shift at the hospital. Finally the key turned in the lock and the door opened. "Serena." He turned his head away from the late night movie he had been watching. Serena looked at him "What?" She didn't want to face Darien, he suspected her avoidance of him; Darien was a smart guy, she should have known earlier. "I want to talk to you." He said. Serena sighed "I'm tired Darien." She turned her back on him and headed for her own room. Darien followed her "Serena. What is wrong with you? Why are you avoiding me?" he grabbed her arm and yanked her around to face him. Serena tried shook him away "Let go, Darien! You're hurting me!" her voice was so loud that even Serena was shocked by the intensity of her voice. Darien shook his head "Not unless you tell me what is wrong!" Serena shook her head "There is nothing wrong!" she insisted. Darien was angry, so angry that he let Serena's arms slip away from his grasp and found himself on the sofa again. "We live together Serena, I don't want to hold us to hold grudges against each other." He said at last. Serena was annoyed. She'd had a bad day at the hospital; she'd had a headache in the morning and work at the hospital had been especially busy. "I don't hold grudges, Darien." She insisted. Darien rolled his eyes and sighed "Yeah, that's why you're avoiding me twenty four-seven" Serena stomped her feet "I didn't avoid you! I've just been busy lately with work and all. You know!" she yelled. Darien stood up again "Why are you yelling Serena? I just made a statement of the truth." Why am I acting like this? Darien wondered, it wasn't like him to act so sarcastic but somehow, tonight he couldn't help the sarcasm in his voice. It had been a long time since a woman had exasperated him so much. He sighed again. "I'm worried about you Serena. That was all." He said at last. Serena looked hard at him. "Why are you worried?" She said quietly and Darien sensed the hint of pain in her voice. "Because I care about you. We're friends Serena. We live together under the same roof. Why wouldn't I care?" he said. Serena sighed and closed her eyes momentarily; the headache had returned. "I'm okay." Darien shook his head. It's only been a few months since he and Serena had met and he could tell already if she was lying; Serena was a feeble liar. "Do you honestly think I will believe you?" Serena shook her head "No." She turned away from him and headed for the door of the flat. "Where are you going Serena?" he demanded. "I'm getting out of here!" She yelled back at him. He grabbed her arm and spun her around to face him "You don't have anywhere to go to!" There was tears in her eyes as she pulled herself free of him "Anywhere is better than here!" she yelled. Why am I crying? She was ashamed of herself. It had been a long time since she had cried. Even the constant nightmares of her past hadn't made her shed a single tear. So why was she crying now? For a man that she hardly even know. "Why are you acting like this Serena?" Darien asked exasperated. "I don't know!" Serena cried, and yet she did know. She was jealous of Elizabeth and she knew it. She didn't want to be, but that dark side in her heart had forced her to encounter one of the seven deadly sins. Inside, her mind was screaming for her to stop, to be jealous of a person night and day was a very tiring job. She shook her head "God, Darien. I'm so tired." She whimpered; a tear fell from her eyes. "What's wrong Serena?" Darien asked again, he could feel the pain vibrating in her heart. Closing her eyes; tears spilling over her eyelids, Serena shook her head "It's nothing Darien. It's nothing." Yes. She whispered to herself. Say it a few more times and it might come true. ************************************************************************ "Darien." Elizabeth said, she reached out her hands to poke him gently on the shoulder. What was wrong with him? No reaction. "Darien?" she repeated again. "Mmmm?" he looked up from his coffee. Serena. All his time, his mind had been n Serena. Why was she avoiding him? Why? Had he done something wrong? He didn't know, all he knew was that. All of a sudden, the distance between he and Serena had begun to drift further and further apart. Elizabeth sighed, "Is something wrong?" She watched the expressions on Dariens face change and knew immediately what he'd been thinking about. Serena. How distant that name sounded after just one year. She knew Serena had suffered these past 22 years, and yet so had she. Often she'd find herself envying Serena's freedom whilst she'd had to stay inside ndulging in the heart of her illness. Elizabeth sighed inwardly; now that is life, isn't it. Humans will never get what they truly wanted. True, she had love, something Serena never had and yet her yearnings for Serena's freedom were much greater than her desire to be loved. Reaching out, Elizabeth touched Darien's face gently with her hands and smiled knowingly up at him. "Is it Serena?" Darien looked up. Did he just hear a slight edge in Elizabeth's voice? Darien shrugged, deciding it was wiser not to reveal anything yet. "No, just some unsolved cases at the force." Elizabeth shook her head. She knew him well; he wasn't telling her the truth. "She's my sister, you know." She said suddenly. Darien looked up again, startled "What did you say?" Elizabeth looked away "Serena is my sister." Outside the window, late dwellers were hurrying home. Darien shook his head in confusion. Had he heard wrong? Lord, all of a sudden it seemed as though the seemingly normal life he had carefully gathered back together after the accident was beginning to fall apart again. "You're joking." Elizabeth shook her head. "No. I'm telling you the truth. From what she has told me so far, you met Serena right after she woke up from a coma, which forced her to loose most of her memory. Am I correct?" Darien nodded. Was Elizabeth telling him the truth or was Serena really Elizabeth's sister. "Yes, but-" He was on the verge of mentioning Serena's nightmares and yet his reluctance saved his words, Elizabeth was already busy retelling him Serena's life. "Times passed so quickly when we were young." She looked at Darien with tears in her eyes "We used to be best friends. We even cut our hands once to bond our blood." She shook her head, marvelling at her own childhood fantasies "Of course, we were young than. Things began to change as we grew older and started to understand why our lives had suddenly begun to fall apart. For me, it was my illness. It came the year I was 7. Serena was 8 than, our friendship started to fall apart the year she went to school." Darien knew immediately what Elizabeth must have been pointing at. "Her scar?" For some reason, he had just assumed without being told that Serena has had the scar far longer than her memory would remember. Elizabeth nodded "Partly, and partly because of our mother." "Your mother?" Darien questioned. Elizabeth sighed shortly "Yes, our mother. I don't know why, but it had always been that way. Everything about Serena was wrong in my mother's eyes. While I'd-" Darien finished for her "While you'd been your mother's angel." For some unknown reason, the night of the accident flashed into his mind. Elizabeth looked sadly down at her reflection in her cup of coffee. A tear fell from her eyes. "I didn't mean to." Darien's heart immediately skipped a beat as he watch the tear down Elizabeth's cheeks; it was the first time he'd seen her cry. "Oh Elizabeth, I didn't mean it that way. Will you forgive me?" He reached out and kissed her gently on the forehead. Gently, Elizabeth pushed him down again. "Really, I'm okay, Darien." Darien settled back down on his seat and sighed. Another piece of the puzzled had been solved and yet, answers always led to more questions.
