Devon walked through the streets of downtown Tokyo with alacrity. He was anxious to get home. The streets were unusually quiet because most everybody was inside. His home was located several blocks from Grass Valley. The walk should only last for about twenty minutes. He continued to wonder about the strange fireworks display. What was going on in this city? Osaka was never this strange! He crossed a street and entered an alley that would take him on a shortcut to his house. On most days, the alley would be full of people and parked cars, but today, it was completely deserted. This filled Devon with a premonition of danger. It was too quiet. He was all alone. Suddenly, a wave of fear hit him, and he broke into a sprint. He crossed a corner and stopped. What am I doing? He thought. What am I running away from? It's nothing; literally. What is there to be afraid of? He forced himself to walk like a man. Suddenly, there was a reason for him to be afraid. A cry of anger filled the air. It was a female voice. Then there was a crash. A roar filled the air like a thunderstorm, but it was sunny out. Devon began to panic. He wanted to run away, but something kept him rooted to the spot. He moved forward towards the source of the noises. Perhaps there was a car accident and someone needs help. He came to a fork, where the alleyway intersected a sidewalk that led between two incredibly tall buildings. He slowly rounded the corner. Instantly, something crashed into him. He was hit with a surge of adrenaline so powerful, that he was engulfed by a painful convulsion. He cried out and collapsed to the ground. Whatever had hit him fell on top of him. He couldn't move or see, or even think straight, so he just lay under the heavy weight, without moving. Gradually, his senses returned. He noticed that the weight on him was warm and soft. It felt like human skin. He soon discerned two legs, a torso, and hair. Someone was lying on top of him. "Hey!" Hands tingling in fear, he tried to push the person off. He realized that it was a female. She shook her head, and suddenly opened her eyes. Gasping, she raised herself so she was sitting astride him, and then stood. "I'm so sorry!" She cried. Devon couldn't stand. His trembling limbs refused to support him. "Are you all right?" The concern in her voice told Devon that she was not hostile. He breathed deeply, trying to calm himself. "Y-Y-Yes...I-I... Think that...I-I'll be...a-all...ri-ight." Devon slowly rolled over onto his stomach. He felt quite dizzy. He slowly opened his eyes while continuing to breathe deeply. The woman stood over him. Actually, she was not a woman. She appeared to be a teenager of his age. She was wearing what appeared to be a suit with a very short skirt. Her hair was a beautiful blonde, and it was thick, flowing down to her waist. Her eyes were a deep blue, and they registered concern. Her small mouth was open slightly. "Here, let me help you up." The girl held her hand to him. It was encased in a white glove. Devon reached out for the hand without thinking. He was still trembling, but his mind began to relax from the shock. He studied the girl as she helped him to a sitting position. She was the prettiest girl he had ever seen in his lifetime. He cursed himself slightly for his embarrassing show of fear. "Where do you live?" The girl was regarding Devon with her mesmerizing blue eyes. He afforded a weak smile. "Nineteen o' one street, where it intersects that avenue." Devon pointed to the street on his right. Sailor Venus frowned. This poor boy that she had hurt needed to walk several blocks through an area that may be filled in a few minutes with the diabolical Borg. She helped him to his feet. He looked quite unsteady, as if he was going to faint. She weighed her options. She could bring him with her, but he might be hurt or killed by the Borg. She could leave him here, but that would bring him the same fate. "Ex-excuse me, may I ask you your name?" This kid was really polite, especially after being struck down and possibly injured. "My name is Sailor Venus. You may have heard of me." At this, the boy's eyes widened. "Sailor Venus? I thought that you and the other 'scouts' were mascots of this city!" "What?" "Oh, I am sorry if I insulted you!" He seemed bent on not offending her. "Oh, no no no! That didn't insult me at all! What is your name?" "I'm Devon." Devon smiled at her warmly, but he was still shaking slightly from his rush. "Well, Devon. It is really nice to meet you. However, I do wish the times were better." Sailor Venus decided on a plan for him. "Huh, why do you say that?" Devon's face registered concern at the detected fear in her face. "This whole area is not safe, Devon. I don't have time to explain, but we are about to be attacked. I'm taking you with me!" "What?" Devon was incredulous. That was a very outlandish story! However, recent events sobered him. There were those strange explosions in the sky, for starters. And after all, this was Sailor Venus, the alleged crime fighter. Devon decided to submit. "All right, but where will we go?" "I'm taking you to my place." Sailor Venus's alter ego, Mina, lived just across the alley. Sailor Venus decided to take Devon there, where they would wait this out. Her parents were away on one of their frequent business trips, so this probably wouldn't cause too much of a problem. There was a good chance that she would need to leave and go off to battle, however, and she hoped that she wasn't bringing a thief into her house. A thief, or worse. Venus pulled on Devons arm, and they started away at a jog. "You are not a thief or anything, are you?" Venus asked. "What? Of course not!" Devon was slightly insulted at the question, but he understood it. Venus, sensing the hurt in his voice, decided to gamble on his being innocent of crime. One couldn't be too sure, however. "I may have to leave...to do battle with the invaders." "Oh, of course you do!" Devon's voice held a faint touch of sarcasm. "Yes, I do, really!" Venus laughed. Her story was outlandish. Devon's footfalls started out erratic, but gradually grew stronger and more rhythmical as they crossed the narrow street. They approached a complex of townhouses that were located on the other side of the street from the huge, empty office buildings. The homes were luxurious, especially for inside a city. Venus led Devon to a front porch that led into a house. "Your house?" Devon asked, admiring it. "Uh, huh." Venus pulled him inside, and slammed the door behind him. It was nearly pitch black inside. Devon experienced a wave of excitement. He was never inside a girl's house alone before, and he was with one of the prettiest girls he had ever met. She flipped on the light switch, revealing a raised entry with tile floor. It was a western style house, no traditional wooden floor. Pictures on the wall revealed a smiling, winking girl, with large blue eyes, and long, long beautiful straight blonde hair. Instead of her current outfit, a workout type tunic fastened with a large golden brooch, and a very short skirt; the girl in the picture sported a longer blue skirt, and traditional school uniforms. My gosh! Devon thought. That is a Grass Valley uniform! He looked at his companion again, and realized that they were the same people. "Is that you in civilian garb?" Devon asked, pointing to the photograph. "Yes, that is me in my normal form. My name is Mina." She didn't feel that she needed to keep her identity a secret; after all, he already knew where she lived, and he was in her power should he try to harm her. "Come on, follow me!" Venus pulled Devon towards a staircase farther inside the house. Devon dropped to remove his shoes. "Don't worry about that, Devon." Devon abandoned his laces and stood, following the pretty girl up the stairs. They entered a long hallway that sported closed doors on each side. She moved to a door on the right that was adorned with posters and drawings; her bedroom no doubt. Devon's excitement intensified as the girl led him inside. Sailor Venus entered the room first, and flipped open the light switch. Instantly, a white cat that was sitting on the bed jumped down. "What took you so..." The cat noticed Devon, and its eyes widened in fright. Devon himself was no better off. His eyes widened, his mouth dropped, and he began to mutter incoherent phrases. He shuddered and began to back away. Sailor Venus reached out and snared Devon in her hand. She pulled him back inside her room. She then reached out with her other hand, and snared the retreating cat with it. She held them so they were face to face with each other. "Artemis, I would like you to meet Devon. Devon, this is Artemis!" Devon said nothing, but began to tremble again. The cat meowed loudly. "Here, sit down." Venus pointed to the foot of her bed, and Devon moved to it. She sat beside him and whispered: "What's wrong? Are you allergic to cats or something?" "T-That cat......it...it talks!" Devon stared at the animal in wide eyed fright. "What? Oh no! You must have been hearing things! Artemis here sometimes likes to chatter, but it isn't really words!" "N-no! He was really t-talking! He said 'W-what took you so...'" "He did?" Venus faked surprise. "Yes." "Well, I guess I can't lie to you then. Devon, Artemis talks because he is one of the guardians of the Sailors." "O-o-oh." "Well, anyway..." Sailor Venus was cut off by the sound of an explosion in the distance. The trio ran to the bedroom window and looked out. They saw a plume of smoke rising up from a building far away. Suddenly, a ball of light raced down from the sky, and impacted another building. Three seconds later, there was another crash. Sound is slow! "The Borg!" Sailor Venus whirled around just as something in her tunic started to bleat. She pulled it out, revealing a small computer type instrument. It looked like a cellular phone, but there was a television screen on it. Emblazoned on the back was the astronomical sign of Venus. The pretty girl punched a few buttons on the device, and another girl appeared on the screen. This girl had short blue hair. "Sailor Venus, we need you! Where have you been?" Accompanying the new girl's voice was the sound of shouting and screaming mixed in with the wail of emergency vehicles. Out the window, the sound of other sirens became noticeable. "All right, I'm on my way!" Venus closed the device, and turned towards Devon. "Devon, I need to go help the others. You need to stay here to be safe. Stay in my room, and I'll come back for you when it is all over." She thought: I may not come back! You may be greeted by a platoon of Borg soldiers, or a firebomb! I hope you are safe here. Devon looked saddened and afraid. "Okay, when will you return?" "I'm not too sure. There's food in my drawers! I've gotta go! See you later!" Without missing a beat, Sailor Venus and her talking cat leapt out of the second floor window and onto the street below. They ran off into the distance. Devon looked after them in apprehension. The Borg advanced their sphere towards the planet Earth. They decided to begin the assimilation of Earth with the city called Tokyo. This is where the five scouts, and the host of Roshalon were found. They fired three energy weapons toward the geometric center of the populated area. Hopefully, that would compromise any organized planetary resistance; and prevent the needless waste of units. To conquer billions of people, the Borg needed units, and there were only several thousand aboard. The Enterprise disappeared into the troposphere somewhere over the Philippine Islands, so they would have to be dealt with. The unit Roshalon was to lead the first excursion to the surface. Once the majority of the soldiers were on the surface, the defense of the sphere would become less of a priority. The Borg would transfer the Collective to the surface. They proceeded. Sailor Venus and Artemis raced along the roofs of buildings toward the two smoking piles of debris that were once buildings. Below them, the originally quiet and anticipating streets now held the action of a reacting public. Emergency vehicles raced by on the way to assist the injured. People poured out of their buildings and into the walkways; some screaming in fear, others to afraid to speak. Police were soon diverted from the scenes of the explosions, to control the massing crowds that could erupt into panicked violence. From the building-tops, these throngs looked rather like a flood. They rippled and changed form just like water. They also flowed in the direction of the blasts, like a river into the ocean. This melee filled Venus with a greater sense of urgency. The Borg could arrive at any time, and the state of panic would only worsen at the sight of the aliens. More people would die from being trampled than would be taken by the enemy. What if the Borg fired again? Hundreds of people would perish! Venus increased her stride, and scooped Artemis into her arms. They leaped onto an adjacent building. Traversing it in ten seconds, they were preparing to leap to the next roof when they heard a cry below them. "We're down here, Venus!" Sailor Venus and Artemis looked down to see Sailors Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Sailor Moon in the street below. They were surrounded by rubble and overturned cars. The shockwaves from the blast must have traveled out that far. Venus clutched Artemis to her chest, and leaped off the high rise. Landing on the walk below, she joined the other Sailors. "What took you so long?" Asked Luna. "I'm sorry," Venus said. "I crashed into somebody after the beamdown. He almost lost consciousness. I had to move him away from the danger." "How're we going to handle these crowds?" Exclaimed Mars, looking around. The scouts were clearing a path through the debris for the emergency vehicles, but now the streets were clogged with frightened people. "Let's call the Enterprise and request backup!" Suggested Sailor Mercury. The others nodded in affirmation. Mercury pulled a small golden Starfleet communicator off of her tunic. Communicators were issued to all of the scouts. "Sailor Mercury to the Starship Enterprise, please come in!" The blue haired scout listened for a response. "Enterprise here." came the reply, the deep bass voice of Worf. "There are problems in Tokyo, Enterprise. Several weapons have detonated, and there are buildings down. The civilians are panicking in the street. They are going to be caught in the fight!" "Understood! A shuttle-craft will be dispatched to make fly by announcements. We will also beam in several platoons of officers to escort the civilians to safety. Right now, we are still trying to convince the Earth governments that we are not hostile." "Thank you. Mercury out!" Mercury replaced the communicator on her suit, and joined the others. "They are sending help." "Good!" Sailor Venus pointed down the street toward the area from which she came. "The crowds are really thick down there, too." The five girls began escorting men, women, and children back into their homes. They were issuing warnings to take cover, as well. Their intent was not to cause further consternation, but to prevent injury during the imminent battle. Suddenly, a black dot appeared in the sky. The Sailors first thought it to be another weapons discharge, but soon they realized that it was a ship. "It's the shuttlecraft!" Sailor Mercury exclaimed. Sure enough, a small, tear-drop shaped craft entered the sky above them. It's bow sported large, eye shaped, tinted viewports. In the aft, there were two miniature warp engines. On the hull, was the triangle-circle symbol of Starfleet. The craft emitted a soft, electronic hum. It hovered over the street where the Sailors stood. Sailor Venus waved her arms into the air, trying to catch their attention. However, the craft did capture the attention of the throng. The Sailors heard screams of panic as civilians rushed to escape the strange craft. As if sensing the panic, the occupants in the shuttle activated a loudspeaker, and began to speak. "Please do not panic. We mean you no harm. We were sent to assist you in battling a common enemy." The craft hovered there, as if expecting a response. "We ask you to please return to your buildings, and go to a sheltered area." It was as if nothing was said. People who were trying to make it back into their buildings were trampled by others rushing to their cars. Sailor Mercury shook her head and took out the communicator pin. "Sailor Mercury to the occupants of the shuttle. Your efforts are not successful. We need to take stronger action." Riker's familiar voice filled the air. "We read you, Mercury. How should we accomplish this?" "Why don't you beam them to safety?" "That would take time, and witnesses would panic even more." "How can it be any worse than it is now?" "You have a point. A platoon will join you once we beam away the first group." The communicator's transmission ended. Mercury put it back onto her tunic, and turned toward the other scouts. "We need to find some way to keep these people from killing each other." "Why don't you set up an ice shield, blocking their paths?" Venus's suggestion brought nods from the other scouts. "The people would still be likely to hurt themselves." Mercury shook her head. "It's the best we can do. The shuttlecraft will beam the more violent people first." Mars spoke with such an authoritative tone, that the other scouts almost jumped immediately into action. Jupiter stopped them. "What do you think, Sailor Moon?" she asked. "Well, I think I agree with Venus and Mars." Sailor Moon shrugged. "For once!" Mars quipped. Sailor Moon shot her a dirty look. "Let's move!" Venus shouted. The scouts advanced towards the wild crowd. Mercury moved into a position where the people were between herself and a building. Venus and Jupiter waded into the throng, attempting to calm people. Mercury closed her eyes, and summoned her power. "Shine aqua, illusion!" A wall of ice began to form, slowly boxing in the people. This provoked more screams as civilians realized what was happening. Several people dashed madly for the escape routes, but Mars accosted them, and prevented their escape. "Why're you doing this to us?" cried one of the panicked. Sailor Mars fixed him with a harsh, but unthreatening stare. "You need to get to shelter! Since you won't listen, you force us to do things the hard way!" Sailor Mars pushed him gently back into the crowd. Meanwhile, Sailors Venus, Jupiter, and Moon were busy with others in the mob. Mercury's ice barrier assumed a parabolic shape, intercepting the buildings on the block. Immediately, a cluster of about twenty people near the ice vanished in a sparkling blue haze. This caused the others to increase their violence. They started to attack the Sailors. One by one, the scouts retreated, scaling the barrier. Venus was the last one over. Now, the people couldn't be seen, but they could be heard. The hum of the transporters sounded again and again as more and more people were relocated. Finally, the harsh screams and footfalls began to lessen as the number of civilians dwindled. At last, they were all off the street. "Fire soul!" Mars collapsed Mercury's shield, which was no longer necessary. Suddenly, the blue haze of the transporter sounded again. A sea of black and mustard-color clad soldiers appeared. Many of them carried phaser rifles. The leaders, dressed in red and black, stepped forward. They were Riker and Worf. "So glad to join you!" Exclaimed Riker. The street was deserted except for them. The shuttle remained over the street. Suddenly, the craft's loudspeaker sounded. "Warning! Transport in progress!" Green lights appeared all over the block. Each one solidified into a Borg soldier. The creatures materialized evenly throughout the area. They were spaced evenly as well. The only thing they lacked was motion. Not one of them moved after appearing. Dozens of these enemies were present. "We need reinforcements, now!" cried Riker into his communicator. Sailor Mercury examined the Borgs' positioning. They were evenly spaced, except in one area. There was a path that led from the Sailors and Starfleet officers outward. Mercury was unsure as to its purpose. She soon found out. There was another flash of green light. Two forms were left in its wake. There was a gasp from behind Mercury; Sailor Moon. Mercury looked at the two forms. They slowly walked forward, through the path that the Borg left. One of them was Roshalon. The other was the most unusual Borg that the scouts encountered. It was female! Whereas other soldiers had machine parts rampant on their face, this female Borg did not. Her eyes revealed emotion, something which none of the other Borgs' eyes accomplished. Her eyes held an expression of amusement; an amusement that sent shivers down the scouts' spines. Roshalon's expression was cold and unfeeling; like all of the other Borg. The two moving Borg stopped when they reached twenty feet from the humans. When they spoke, they spoke together; with the same accents, the same gesticulations, and the same words. "We are the Borg." they said. "You will end your hostilities at this time. Your life, as it has been, is over. This city, Tokyo, is ours. From this time forward, you will service us." The female and Roshalon stood together in silence. "Darien!" It was Sailor Moon. She rushed forward towards Roshalon. It was impossible for her to accept that her lover had forgotten her, and was now fighting for the enemy. Even though Tuxedo Mask was once corrupted by the Negaverse, Serena didn't believe that it could occur a second time. Just let me touch him. When he feels my fingers on his cheek, he will remember. Serena walked right up to Roshalon, and raised her hand to touch his face. He raised his mechanical appendage, and grabbed Serena with his other hand. He swung the metal around, and batted her away. She crashed to the ground a distance away, and rolled. She saw stars. The impacts and the pain seemed to become surreal. Suddenly, her head came to rest on a hard surface that jutted up from the ground. Focusing her eyes, she looked up into the impassive face of a Borg soldier. Shrieking, she squirmed to move, but the pain kept her down on the ground. The other scouts witnessed this, and leaped into action. "Serena!" they cried as they watched their leader crumple. Instantly, as if someone had flipped on a light switch, Every Borg soldier began to move. Most of them made a beeline for the scouts and Starfleet platoon. Others began to head for the buildings on either side of the street. The Borg were on all sides, closing the gap. The female Borg and Roshalon stood motionless, watching their soldiers. Roshalon spoke again; this time alone. "The Sailors. Humans enhanced with extraterrestrial abilities. You will become one, with the Borg." The scouts huddled together so that each of their backs were touching. Sailor Moon remained motionless on the ground. Surprisingly, the Borg ignored her. There was no logical reason for the Borg to completely ignore the leader of the Sailor Scouts. "Riker, William Thomas; human species. You will become one, with the Borg." Riker and the platoon drew themselves together as well. They aimed their phasers at either Roshalon and the female, or some of the nearing Borg soldiers. "Why do you resist us? We only wish to improve the quality of life for your species." Roshalon's tone actually sounded less hostile. However, nobody calmed at the Borgs' seemingly benevolence. "We don't want your 'improvements.' " growled Riker, pointing his phaser at Roshalon. "Your minds are closed to the salubrious offerings of the Collective." Riker took a step forward. The advancing soldiers were now only fifteen feet away. "How do you know? Did you ask that poor teenager you assimilated if it was better for him? Did he tell you that he was happy with what you're doing? Is that Tuxedo Mask speaking?" Roshalon's face didn't falter when he spoke. "Tuxedo Mask is irrelevant."
