Soul Mates: The Alternate Ending's Continuation Hello everyone, I'm back for yet another story. If anyone remembers my last story, the one based on Lady's Soul Mates, then they'll know that there was a slight time where Usagi and Mamoru were just friends and were still working out their feelings for each other. In this story, it explains all that happened. This one is a little less weepy then my previous one, and slightly on the soap opera-ish side. It has some scandals, tid-bits and suspense that make shows like '90210' and 'Melrose Place' rip-roaring fun. But I hope it's still good reading. Just a note, I'm using the names 'Usagi' and 'Mamoru', and 'Serenity' and 'Endymion' as well. 'Serenity' and 'Endymion' are the formal names and 'Usagi' and 'Mamoru' are the casual ones. Have fun reading, Black Lady Sailormoon is copyrighted, blah, blah, blipity, blah... need I go on? Usagi was in her bedroom one evening, brushing her hair and looking at her reflection in the mirror. She noticed that for the first time since her brother's death she could truly smile without the look of strain in her eyes. She thought to herself. She continued to brush her hair and to reflect upon the past. Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door. "Princess," Came Galen's voice. "May I come in?" Usagi put down her hairbrush and rose to open the door. "My door is always open for you Galen." She said while opening the door. She ushered him in and seated him on one of her chairs in her chamber. "Is there anything I can do for you?" She asked while seating herself on another chair. "I came to talk to you." Galen said starting off slowly. "Is something wrong?" Usagi's voice was immediately full of concern. "No, no." Galen said, to reassure Usagi. He paused for a moment to collect his thoughts. "Prince Mamoru and his Generals will be arriving tomorrow at noon." He said at last. Usagi gave a cheerful laugh. "You must have overheard it from the Inner Senshi." She said with a smile. "They are very excited about the arrival of the Generals." Galen heard her laughter and smiled deeply. The princess had grown up so quickly since her brother's death. She had fully matured into an elegant lady and would one day be a fine queen. Usagi had grieved for a while, but had finally returned to her sweet, caring and optimistic self. But this was all because of Prince Mamoru; he had helped her tremendously. Everyone always wondered what would have happened if Mamoru had not been there for Usagi. Galen, like many people, feared that Usagi may not have done so well without Mamoru's help. The two were very close friends now, and there were talks of engagements and alliances. "I talked to your mother recently, and she told me that she had something very important to talk to you about." He said. "She asked that I come to you and discuss the issue with you." "What issue?" Usagi's curiosity was piqued. "Do you remember when Mamoru was first brought up by your mother?" Galen asked. "There were talks of engagements?" "Oh," Usagi's voice was slightly softer, and her face had a carefully placed blank look. But Galen could see that in her eyes, there was a mixture of confusion and uneasiness. "I see," She said after a while. "Are Mother and Queen Hermione of Earth planning a union?" "Your mother said that no one would push you into a marriage that you didn't want." Galen said carefully. "This decision would be yours alone." "How does Mamoru feel about this?" She asked, her eyes still filled with the same expression. "That's the purpose of his arrival tomorrow. He wishes to talk to you about it." Galen said. "Oh." Was all Usagi could say. But her mind was turbulent with thoughts. The next day at noon, Usagi, the Senshi, and the Royal Guards were standing at the platform where Mamoru and the Generals would arrive. Needless to say, the Inner Senshi were very excited. Their faces were full of joy and anticipation. The Outer Senshi and the Guards were also excited about the arrival of their friends. Usagi had a smile on her face, but it looked somewhat forced. Ashe noticed this and murmured to Galen. "What's wrong with Usagi?" He asked softly. "I'm not sure," Galen said with a slight frown. "Ever since I told her about the hopes of a union, she's been very quiet and withdrawn." "Do you think she would agree to it?" Ashe asked, his voice low. "I'm not sure." Galen continued to frown. Prince Mamoru stepped off his vessel with his Generals and was greeted by the sight of ecstatic friends. When the Generals reached their loved ones, they swept them into passionate embraces. Mamoru turned to Usagi and immediately noticed her forced smile. She seemed distant, as if something was bothering her. "Is something wrong princess?" His brow creased with concern. Usagi shook herself out of haze and smiled a genuine smile at Mamoru. "I apologize for my rudeness Mamoru." She said while curtsying gracefully. "No need Usagi." He said while bowing in return. Later that afternoon, Usagi and Mamoru were taking a stroll in the garden. The other Senshi, Guards and Generals had gone off in pairs to the rest of the palace grounds. The two were admiring the roses in the garden and talking about the last time the prince had visited. Usagi was recounting the tale where Mamoru had gone with her on a horseback ride. A burr had somehow slipped underneath Usagi's horse's saddle and when she had sat on the saddle, the horse had shot off with a very frightened Usagi on it's back. Mamoru had come to the rescue and brought back a shaken Usagi back to the palace. "I don't think Rei will ever let me live it down." Usagi laughed to Mamoru. "Every time the Senshi go on a horseback ride, Rei always asks me slyly if I'll be needing someone to rescue me." Mamoru laughed, but somewhat distantly. He thought with determination. Mamoru turned to Usagi. There was an intense expression in his face. "Usagi, I need to talk to you about something important." His voice low. Usagi turned to him, and bit her lip. She saw the expression in his eyes and knew what he was about to ask. She silently pleaded. "I think I hear Galen and Haruka coming." She said looking about the garden. She was desperately looking for a way out of the situation. "Usagi," Mamoru said, taking her hands in his. He looked into her eyes and she found herself unable to escape from his deep eyes. "I have loved you since the moment I first laid eyes on you." His voice was full of emotion. "I am completely and madly in love with you." Usagi was shaking her head, trying to make him stop. But Mamoru continued with his words. "I love your courage, your warmth, your compassion." He looked into her eyes, and she knew that he meant every word. "I love you; and since we've become such close friends, I've come to love you even more." Usagi's eyes were a mixture of sadness and wistfulness. Mamoru saw it but he still continued. "And I need to know Usagi, do you love me in return?" His eyes searched her face, looking for an answer. Usagi's eyes slowly filled with tears, and it seemed like an eternity before she answered him. She thought. "Mamoru, I love you." She said softly. Mamoru's soul filled with ecstasy. But her next words pierced his heart. "But not the way you love me." A tear fell. "I love you only as a friend." "Usagi, I can't love you only as a friend." He said wiping her tear. "I want more than that, I want to spend the rest of my life with you." Usagi gently broke away from him. "I'm sorry Mamoru, but friendship is all I have to offer." Her eyes were hidden. "Then so be it." He said softly, but the tone was harsh and cut her deeply. He walked off not looking back. "Mamoru." She called, her voice trying to hold back tears. He paused, but didn't look back. "I don't want to lose our friendship." Her voice was begging that he'd turn around and assure her that everything would be back as they were. "I'm sorry princess, but I want more." Mamoru said in the same harsh tone. He continued walking. Usagi watched him walk off and another tear slipped onto her cheek. "First Damian," She whispered. "Now Mamoru." She walked towards the other direction to her bedroom. She willed herself not to break down before she reached the privacy of her room. Kunzite and Minako were in the front hall admiring the many tapestries and statues adorning the hall. They were looking at a tapestry depicting the solar system when they heard angry footsteps enter the hall. The two turned around and saw Mamoru walking towards the West wing where his chamber was. Mamoru's face gave nothing away, but his eyes were dark and pained. He said nothing to Kunzite and Minako and continued walking. After Mamoru was out of earshot, Minako turned to Kunzite. "What do you suppose that was about?" She whispered. Then she realized that Usagi wasn't with Mamoru. "Do you suppose Usagi and Mamoru had an argument?" "I'm not sure." Kunzite said slowly. He was about to continue when the two heard more footsteps. The two looked up and found Galen and Haruka walking towards them with frowns on their faces. "Have either of you seen Mamoru?" Haruka asked. "We just saw Usagi walking towards her chamber, and she was crying." "Why is Usagi crying?" Minako asked immediately. "She wouldn't say." Haruka answered. "Mamoru just came in and he looked very hurt." Kunzite said softly to himself. "I think I know what happened." Three sets of eyes fell upon him. "Mamoru told me that he's deeply in love with Usagi." Kunzite started off. The realization struck Galen. "And Mamoru came to the Moon to talk to Usagi about a union." He said softly. "He must have proposed to her and she must have said no." A stunned silence fell upon the group. "If you'll excuse me then," Kunzite said leaving. "I think I should go see how Mamoru is doing." "We'll go check on Usagi." Galen said. Usagi was in her room, sitting on her bed and crying. She thought bitterly. There was a knock on the door. "Usagi?" Came Galen's voice. "We need to talk." "This really isn't a good time right now." Usagi said, quickly wiping her tears. "We know what happened." Came Minako's voice. "Did Mamoru tell you?" Usagi asked dully. "We figured it out on our own." Galen replied. "Please let us in." Usagi stood up and opened the door. She saw that all the Senshi and Guards were there. "I'm not sure if all you will fit into my room." She said weakly with a forced smile, trying to show that she was all right. "Don't worry, it'll just be a few people." Minako said, taking charge. She walked over to Usagi and gave her a supportive hug. "Do you want to talk about it?" Usagi closed her eyes and nodded her head. Minako led her back into her room and the rest of the Inner Senshi followed. The Outer Senshi and the Guards waited patiently outside. "And you just stormed off?" Nephrite asked incredulously. The four Generals were in Mamoru's room listening to Mamoru's story. The four were sitting in various chairs while Mamoru was pacing furiously on the floor. "I know it was rude and foolish," Mamoru said, berating himself. "But I felt so hurt and humiliated." "What are you going to do now?" Zoisite asked softly. "What I should have done in the first place." Mamoru said softly. "I'm going to apologize and accept her offer of friendship." "He just stormed off?" Makoto asked, not believing that Mamoru could be so unkind. Usagi just nodded her head and wiped away another tear. "I don't love him like that." She said softly. "He helped me get though my grief over Damian, and I'll always be grateful to him for that, but I just don't love him like that." "Don't worry," Ami said, giving her a hug. "We understand, and so does Mamoru." "Then why can't we be friends anymore?" Usagi asked, to no one in particular. "No princess," Came Mamoru's voice from the doorway. "We are friends." The five women turned their heads towards the source. The Inner Senshi quickly stood up and quietly left the room. Minako gave Usagi a supportive smile before closing the door. Usagi looked at Mamoru, but then she looked away. Mamoru slowly approached her and when he reached her he touched her shoulder. "I'm so sorry Usagi." He said, his voice low. "I had no right to treat you like that, and I hope that you can forgive me." Usagi turned her head towards him and saw that he was offering her a yellow rose as a symbol of their friendship. Usagi gently accepted the flower and smiled at Mamoru. "I hope that you can understand my decision.? She said softly. Mamoru nodded his head. ?You're my closest friend Mamoru," She whispered. "I never want to lose you." Mamoru smiled at her, even though he felt his heart break. A year later, invitations were sent throughout the solar system for an upcoming ball in the palace of the Moon Kingdom. Invitations were sent from Pluto to Mercury, every noble man and woman would be attending. All the invitations were the same: You are cordially invited to the engagement ball of Princess Serenity of the Moon and Prince Hiatus of the Sun "When will Prince Mamoru and the Generals arrive?" Michiru asked Haruka. "Galen said that they'll be arriving in the early afternoon." Haruka responded as she went over the last decoration in the ballroom. The Outer Senshi were going over the ballroom for the great ball that night. The masquerade ball was to celebrate the engagement of Usagi and Hiatus. The Inner Senshi were with Usagi, helping her prepare for the ball. "I'm so glad that they decided to accept the invitation to the engagement party." Hotaru said as she helped Setsuna go over the guest list. "It's very big of Mamoru to accept the invitation." Setsuna commented absently. "He's had time to have gotten use to the idea of Usagi being engaged to Prince Hiatus." Haruka pointed out. "Several months, I believe." "True," Michiru said. "But this will be the first time Prince Hiatus and Mamoru will meet." "Michiru is right." Hotaru said. "Usagi and Mamoru are still close friends, but his feelings for her have never changed." "But isn't Mamoru courting a princess from Earth?" Haruka asked. "The courtship ended a month ago," Michiru answered softly. "The princess ended it saying that she would always be second best as long as Mamoru loved Usagi." The four said nothing more as they finished the rest of the work in silence. Usagi, the Senshi and the Guards were standing at the platform waiting for Mamoru's vessel to arrive. Usagi thought to herself. But then she realized what she had just thought. Her train of thought was interrupted by the arrival of Mamoru and the Generals. Mamoru was deep in thought when Kunzite nudged his arm. "We have arrived on the Moon." Kunzite said. Mamoru said nothing but nodded his head. He thought sadly to himself. "Will you be all right?" Zoisite asked gently. He was the more sensitive of the Generals and could sense Mamoru's thoughts. "Of course." Mamoru said with a quick smile. "I'm very happy that Usagi found someone to share the rest of her life with." The Generals knew that Mamoru was lying but said nothing more. Mamoru disembarked the vessel and walked towards Usagi, the Senshi and the Guards. He reached Usagi and bowed deeply. "Congratulations on your engagement Usagi." He said with a smile. "I wish Hiatus and you joy and happiness." "Thank you Mamoru, you're too kind." She said curtsying in return, her smile had a look of relief in it. The two stood there and smiled at each other. Usagi realized that the two were just standing there and she mentally gave herself a shake. "I apologize that Hiatus couldn't be here." Usagi said after a while. "He had some business on the Sun, so he'll be arriving later before the ball." Mamoru felt a stab to his heart but continued smiling. It was the height of the ball, and everyone was enjoying themselves immensely. Everyone had on their finest and masks to cover their faces. Pairs of dancers were dancing to the ballroom music. Many people were outside, admiring the fiery fireworks. People were standing on edges of the room, talking amongst each other. In the middle of it were Usagi and Hiatus. Everyone was congratulating them on their engagement, and the lovely couple were smiling and shaking hands. Usagi was in a white gown, with her mask in her hand. She felt that this was the happiest day of her life. The man she loved was next to her, and within a month's time, the two would be united. Usagi had met Hiatus several months after Mamoru had proposed to her. Hiatus had come to the Moon, on behalf of the Sun, so that that the two kingdoms could form an alliance. Hiatus was a handsome man, with blond hair and a charming smile. He reminded Usagi somewhat of Damian. The same care-free attitude, and enthusiasm for life. The two had liked each other immediately after the first time they met each other. He courted her for several months before asking for her hand in marriage. Usagi turned to look at Hiatus and found that despite his happy smile, his eyes looked guilty and burdened. He had been like this since he had arrived on the moon and refusing to tell anyone what was wrong. She thought to herself. She leaned closely to Hiatus and whispered to him. "Are you all right?" Her voice full with concern. She didn't expect a response. She had already asked him many times why he looked so troubled but he refused to tell her. However, to her surprise, Hiatus gave her a response. Hiatus turned slowly to her and his eyes had haunted look to them. Usagi wasn?t sure of this was a good sign of things to come. "Usagi," He whispered back. "We must talk." Usagi nodded and Hiatus led to her an empty room in the South wing of the palace. Hiatus led her to a chair and motioned for her to sit. "Hiatus," She said with confusion. "What's wrong? You look so troubled." Hiatus said nothing at first, he walked towards the window and stared out of it. "Usagi," He said after an awful silence. "I don't know how to tell you." Usagi's heart started to pound. "Tell me what?" She whispered. "I have to tell you why I arrived at the Moon this afternoon instead of last night." He was still looking out the window. Usagi said nothing, but she prepared herself for the worst. She gripped the arm of the chair tightly. There was a moment of silence before Hiatus started to talk again. Usagi found the silence unbearable, and wished that he would say something to make it stop. "A duchess from one of the smaller kingdoms on the Sun came to my palace yesterday. She came to propose a possible alliance between all the kingdoms on the Sun." Hiatus said, his voice shaking. "I felt an attraction towards her..." His voice trailed off. Usagi was staring at Hiatus's back with eyes that showed betrayal. "Did-" Her voice wavered. "Did anything happen between the two of you?" Hiatus finally turned around and looked at her face. Usagi could see that there were tears in his eyes. "Usagi, I spent the night with her." Usagi felt her world go silent as she felt her heart shatter. She hung her head as her eyes filled with hot tears and her hand came to her face. Hiatus rushed towards her and got down on his knees in front of her. He took hold of her other hand and held it tightly. She tried to take her hand back, but he wouldn't let go. "I'm so sorry Usagi," He said hoarsely. "I know that it's too late for apologies, but I'm so sorry." Usagi said nothing as tears ran down her face. She lifted her head to look at Hiatus's face and saw that there were tears on his face as well. "You've really hurt me." She whispered at last. She wanted to stand up and say so much more but this was all she could manage to say. "I know, I'm so sorry." Hiatus whispered back. "But Usagi, I love you. I still want to share the rest of my life with you. Last night was just a bad mistake." Usagi looked up into his eyes and saw the sincerity in them. "Please Usagi," He begged softly. "Please forgive me, I love you and I need you so much in my life." "Hiatus, I can't," Usagi whispered, turning her head away. "I can't forgive someone who's hurt me this badly, and I can't be with them either." Hiatus's eyes filled with pain and desperation. "Usagi, please, I love you." Usagi shook her head. "Who's to say that it won't ever happen again?" "It won't Usagi, you have my word that this will never happen again." Hiatus responded immediately. "But what if it did?" Usagi whispered back. "I can't trust you anymore because everytime I'd see you with another woman I'd always assume the worse." "I promise you Usagi, I love you." "I'm sorry Hiatus," Usagi's head looked up and she looked Hiatus straight into his eyes. "But I can't marry you. It would hurt too much." Hiatus slowly stood up and walked back towards the window. "I understand princess." He whispered. "Then our engagement is dissolved." Usagi continued to cry her heartfelt tears. "I love you Usagi." Hiatus said softly. "I know Hiatus," Usagi whispered back. "I know, but I can't marry you." Neither moved for what seemed like an eternity. Neither knew what to do. They both knew that they would eventually have to go back to the ballroom. And they both knew that if they announced their dissolved engagement tonight, it would cause both kingdoms to lose face. "Can we-" Hiatus asked hesitantly. "Can we at least enjoy this last night as a couple?" Usagi wiped her last tear and painfully stood up. She walked slowly towards Hiatus and touched him gently on the arm. "We will tell the others in the morning of our decision." She said in a voice that was breaking. Hiatus took her mask that was in her hand and gently placed it on her face. It completely hid her eyes, so that no one would ever know that she had been crying. Then he placed his own mask on his face, covering his eyes as well. He looked at her and he felt her pain. He felt he had to explain why. "I never meant to..." Then he stopped. "Can we please..." He stopped again. Usagi turned her head so that he couldn't see her new tears. She didn't want him to know how much of an effect he had on her. "Let's just enjoy this last night." She whispered. Hiatus nodded his head sadly. He raised his arm to Usagi, and she placed her arm gently on it. The two walked silently out of the room and into the ballroom. They entered the ballroom and immediately Rei and Minako flew to them. "Where have the two of you been?" Rei said in a whisper that bordered onto a hiss. "We've been looking everywhere for you two." "Leave them alone Rei," Minako said with a soft laugh. "Or don't you ever go off alone with Jadeite?" Rei blushed and said nothing. Hiatus and Usagi both forced a smile and walked silently off. Usagi wanted to leave the ball and go to her chamber to cry. The sights and sounds of happy people around her shattered her heart even more. But she knew that for the rest of the night, Hiatus and her would have to play the part of the happy couple, lest they lose face. She was about to lead Hiatus off to an empty corner so that she could get away from all the happy people, when the trumpets sounded and Queen Serenity stood in front of the guests. "My friends and guests." She said with a joyous smile. "Thank you all for attending my daughter's engagement ball. It gives me great delight to announce the engagement of Prince Hiatus of the Sun Kingdom and Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom." Everyone applauded and cheered as Hiatus and Usagi stood in front of the guests. The two bowed and curtsied to the guests and Hiatus gave Usagi a small kiss on her cheek. Usagi stiffened slightly, but forced herself to relax. The orchestra swelled into a romantic song and Hiatus led Usagi onto the dance floor. "Hiatus really loves her." Minako commented, as the rest of the Senshi and her watched them dance. "He's holding her as if it'll be their last time together." Nearby, Mamoru heard Minako's comment and felt his heart freeze. The next morning, Hiatus and Usagi both woke early and went to the throne room to announce to Queen Serenity their decision. However, Queen Serenity was still asleep as last night's party had run late into the night. "What do we do?" Hiatus asked uncertainly. "We wait." Came Usagi's gentle voice that was no where near her normal cherry tone. She thought. Tears threatened to come forth again but Usagi forced it down. She had cried too much last night after the ball in her room and she didn't want to cry again. "Have you told anyone yet of our decision?" Hiatus asked after a time had passed. "Not yet, I went straight to my room after the ball without talking to anyone." Usagi said in a tired voice that had no emotion. "Did you sleep last night?" Hiatus asked, noticing her voice. "I couldn't." Was all Usagi said. "Will you tell the Senshi of the reason of the decision?" Hiatus asked, after another moment had passed. He knew how protective the Senshi were of their princess and he knew that they wouldn't let him go after what he had done to Usagi. Usagi knew this as well. She turned to him and looked him in the eyes. Hiatus saw the pain and hurt in her eyes. "I love you Hiatus, so I'll keep your secret." "Thank you Usagi." The two continued to wait. After an hour of waiting the Inner Senshi and the Generals came to the throne room. They had just woken up and looked forward to a picnic they had planned out for that day. The Outer Senshi, Guards and Mamoru would be coming as well. They had decided last night that they would all meet in the throne room. "Good morning Usagi, Hiatus." Came Makoto's cheerful voice. "What are you two doing this early in the morning?" "We have something important to tell my mother." Usagi said, trying to force a smile, but not succeeding very well. "Why are all you of you up as well?" "We planned on going out for a picnic today," Ami answered. "We're meeting the others here." "Would you two like to join us?" Zoisite asked. Usagi shook her head, and Hiatus murmured a no. "I'll be leaving for the Sun after Usagi and I talk to Queen Serenity." Hiatus said. "And I feel like reading today." Usagi said, giving up on trying to smile and settling for hiding her eyes. "Perhaps another time." The Senshi and Generals exchanged glances. They all noticed how distant Usagi and Hiatus were acting but said nothing. "Here come the others!" Rei said to ease the tension. The Outer Senshi, Guards and Mamoru walked in. "Good morning everyone." Galen said. "Is everyone ready?" There was a chorus of Yes around the room. "Will you and Hiatus be coming as well?" Drake asked. "We can't," Usagi said in a voice that wasn't hers. "We have to talk to my mother." Mamoru noticed that Usagi was hiding her eyes from the others and that her voice sounded odd. He frowned but said nothing. "What are you two going to talk to your mother about?" Minako asked curiously. Usagi and Hiatus looked at each other, but looked away after a moment. "Perhaps all of you would like to stay to hear it." Hiatus said softly. "It's quite important and you'll probably hear it very soon anyway." Usagi looked at Hiatus, with a look of surprise and admiration in her eyes. "Yes," She said softly. "Please stay for our news." Queen Serenity entered the room and sat at her throne. "You wished to see me daughter?" Queen Serenity smiled. Usagi and Hiatus stepped forward to the front of the throne. "Yes Mother," Usagi began softly. "As of last night, by mutual agreement, Hiatus and I both decided that it would be best if this engagement were to come to an end." The silence around the room was deafening. The Senshi exchanged shocked looks. The Generals were speechless. The Guards were stunned and couldn't move. Mamoru's face was motionless. Queen Serenity blinked but kept her face neutral. "I see," She said at last. "Could either of you tell me why both of you feel the need to end the engagement?" "We both agreed that it wouldn't be in the best interest if we were to be married." Hiatus answered. "However, we both agree that even though we won't marry, that we will still have an alliance between our kingdoms." The room was still and no one could move. "I understand." Queen Serenity said. "I won't force the two of you into a union that neither wants." Her face was regal and calm, but her eyes were a complete myriad of confusion and questions. The session in the throne room was over and everyone walked numbly out. Hiatus turned to Usagi and bowed deeply. "I'll be leaving for the Sun now Princess Serenity." Usagi curtsied back. "Have a safe journey Prince Hiatus." Hiatus walked in the direction of his vessel, and Usagi walked in the direction of her room. The others just watched with open mouths at how indifferent Hiatus and Usagi were treating the situation. Usagi waited until she reached her room before she broke down. She sat on her bed and cried until her heart ached. There was a knock on the door. "Go away," Usagi said in a muffled voice. "I don't want to talk about it." Mamoru entered the room anyway. "Usagi," His voice soft. "Why did you wait until this morning to tell everyone?" "We both thought it would be better this way." She said dully. "Do you want to talk about it?" "I can't, not now. It hurts too much." Mamoru walked towards her bed and wrapped her in his arms. "Then I'll stay until you can." He said, his voice soothing. Usagi just cried onto his shoulder. Two weeks passes, and Usagi still stayed in her room; refusing to come out at all. The Senshi, Guards, Generals and Mamoru went in regularly to comfort her, but it was usually Mamoru. "She's taking this as hard as Damian's death." Logan said to Galen. "I know." Galen said. "Poor Usagi, she's lost two men that she really loved." "But why did they end the engagement then?" Drake wondered out loud. "I heard that Hiatus is taking this just as badly. They both really loved each other, and both of them are hurting so much." "Maybe they had a bad argument about something." "Whatever it is, we'll just have to wait until Usagi is ready to tell us." Mamoru walked into Usagi's room and saw that Usagi was sitting by her window and staring blankly out of it. Her face had no expression on it, but Mamoru could feel the pain she felt. Mamoru walked towards her and sat on a nearby chair. He sat there, unsure of what to say. Usagi turned her head and looked at him. Although Mamoru had said nothing, she could feel the support he was giving her. The two looked each other in the eyes, not saying a word. Usagi thought. Usagi gave an appreciative smile and turned her head to look out the window again. Usagi was in her bed that night, trying to sleep. But she couldn't because her mind was busy thinking. She wondered. But then she remembered that living happily ever after was the same dream she had for Hiatus and herself not too long ago. She thought, her heart aching. She started to cry softly, she could feel her heart painfully bleed. A month passed quietly and Usagi still hadn't told anyone why the engagement had been called off. She started to come out of her room more often, to the relief of her friends but she was so very different. She seemed to mature even more than after her brother's death. She paid more attention to her lessons, and she was less prone to rambunctious giggling. But her maturity had come at a price. Though Usagi was still as sweet and caring as before, she had had become slightly withdrawn. As if afraid to show some of her emotions, lest she get hurt. Even Mamoru couldn't bring back the former Usagi. Even though Mamoru helped her tremendously with her grief, Usagi would still shy away from people. Mamoru was in the garden talking a walk. He had just finished talking to Galen about Usagi. Neither knew what to do. Whenever they tried to talk to Usagi about Hiatus or anything personal, Usagi would just change the subject or give vague answers. Mamoru thought desperately. He suddenly spied Usagi in the garden. She was sitting on an old wooden swing hanging from a tree. She sat there not moving, and just staring at nothing. "Usagi?" Usagi turned around and smiled when she saw Mamoru. "Hello Mamoru." She said softly. "Nice day isn't it?" He thought. "Yes it is a nice day." He responded. "How are you feeling?" "Would it matter?" She muttered to herself. But out loud she said something else. "I'm feeling fine." She said shrugging her shoulders. But Mamoru was not fooled. He had heard her the first time. "Do you want to talk about anything?" He asked, referring to Hiatus. Usagi knew about what Mamoru was talking about it but shrugged her shoulders again. "It's in the past, there's no point talking about it." She continued to look back at nothing. Mamoru walked to her, he couldn't stand it anymore. "Usagi, why are you being this way? Why are you pushing everyone away from you?" Usagi didn't answer. "Usagi, please." He persisted. Usagi could hear the concern in his voice and was moved. She opened her mouth and started to speak softly. Mamoru had to strain himself in order to hear her. "I've lost Damian and I've lost Hiatus." She said, still looking at nothing. "I'm so tired of losing people that I love. I don't want to lose another person." Mamoru finally understood. "You thought it would be better to not love anyone anymore?" He asked gently. "Life is easier that way." Her voice dull. "But isn't life about loving people?" Usagi didn't respond. "Closing off your emotions won't help anyone Usagi." Mamoru tried again. "You have to accept what has happened and to go on with your life." Usagi still didn't say anything. "Damian's death was sad and unfortunate. And I may not know what happened between you and Hiatus, but it can't possibly warrant pushing people away." "How do you know that?" Usagi asked softly, with slight bitterness. "He hurt me so badly, and I don't want to get hurt anymore." "Then what happened then?" Mamoru demanded. "Tell me what was so bad that you've changed so much." Usagi didn't say anything. "Usagi, please." No response. Mamoru took a deep breath, he realized that this approach would get him nowhere. "If you ever want to talk about what happened, then my door will always be open for you." He said in a gentle and caring voice. Mamoru started to walk away. He was about six steps away when Usagi finally spoke. "I want so much to hate Hiatus," Her voice sad and quiet. "I want to call him names and throw things at him, but I can't. I can't because I'm still in love with him." Usagi continued to look at the empty space in front of her. Her voice was thick and intense. "I didn't end the engagement because I didn't love him anymore. I did it because he spent a night with another woman the day he was to come to the Moon for the engagement ball." Mamoru walked quietly to Usagi and put his hand on her shoulder. "I'm sorry." His voice low. "I had no idea." Usagi didn't move, but Mamoru could see the tears on her face. "I can't believe Hiatus could be so heartless." Rei exploded after Mamoru had told the story to the Senshi, Guards and Generals. "How could he do this to her?" "But that would explain Usagi's behavior." Ami said analytically. "A loved one's betrayal, separation from the rest of one's friends, refusing to become emotionally attached to another person..." She trailed off as the others gave her blank stares and blinked. She blushed and looked down at her suddenly fascinating hands in her lap. "Ami," Minako whispered softly as she leaned towards her. "We know you mean well, but this is no time to analyze Usagi's behavior patterns." "So what should we do to help Usagi?" Ashe asked, changing the topic. "I think the only thing we can do is to be patient and give her help when she asks for it." Makoto said. The others nodded their heads. Usagi was in the study, reading a book. The others were in the palace game room. She had declined their invitation so that she could finish her studies. She thought, lifting her head out of her book. She sighed sadly. A tear threatened to fall. She blinked back the tear. Her mind drifted back to the others. She heard footsteps and quickly regained her composure. "Usagi?" Came Mamoru's voice. Usagi froze. Out of everyone. Mamoru was the one to try his hardest to reach out to her. Usagi felt shaken by that, because she didn't want to become so close to him. But at times, she felt taken in by his concern. But then she would shake herself and remind herself of what happened to the last people she loved. "Hello Mamoru." She said, not lifting her head from her book. Mamoru saw her and felt his heart sadden. He knew what she thought whenever she saw him or the others. She saw them as people she didn't want to love because she didn't want to have her heart broken again. He thought with determination. Usagi was in the palace library doing some research for one of her lesson's assignments. "History," She grumbled to herself. "I don't see the point in learning about something that happened fifteen hundred years ago." But then she saw the vision of her tutor giving her a lecture if she didn't get her research done on time. "Princess Usagi," The tutor would say in a haughty tone. "It is imperative that the future queen be knowledgeable in the history of the solar system. That way you shall learn from the past monarch's mistakes and not repeat them yourself." She thought to herself. "Usagi?" Came Mamoru's voice. Usagi gave a yelp and jumped into the air. "Mamoru," She said closing her book and giving her heart the chance to resume a slower pace. "You startled me." "Sorry Usagi." Mamoru's face was serious but Usagi could see the humor in his eyes. And she found herself smiling at him. "Were you looking for me?" Usagi asked, while putting the book back on the shelf. "I wanted to ask you if you wanted to go on a picnic in the fields for lunch." Usagi's smile left her face and was replaced by a slight frown. Her mind raced with possible excuses. "I'm not sure, I have a great deal of research to do, and I have to revise some of my studies." She said slowly. Mamoru thought sadly. But that made him more determined, and so he put a more charming smile on his face. "It'll be fun Usagi," He said winningly. "We can eat lunch with the others, then go for a ride on the horses.." Usagi still hesitated. "I'm not really sure that would be a good idea." She said doubtfully. "When we finish riding the horses, I'll help you revise your studies." Mamoru promised. Usagi said nothing, her mind trying desperately to think of a way out, but no ideas came to her. "Then it's decided." He said taking her hand and leading her outside. Usagi just followed wordlessly. She thought. The next few months passed by. Little by little, Mamoru slowly drew Usagi out of her shell. He persuaded her to come to outings with the others. She spent more time with the others, shared her emotions with them and became more like her old self. One afternoon, Usagi was with the Inner Senshi. They were in the courtyard revising their studies. "Usagi?" Rei asked after the five of them had studied for an hour. "May I ask you a question?" "Of course." Usagi said absently; her mind was on the rule of King Fortinbras during the Battle of Tarakia. "Do you still love Hiatus?" Rei asked hesitantly. The others looked at Rei with a bewildered expression on their faces. Ami thought. Makoto thought. Minako thought. Usagi looked up from her book with a surprised expression in her face. She thought for a moment before responding. "Hiatus was very special to me and a part of me will always love Hiatus." She said slowly. "But I don't like thinking about him, it's too hard sometimes. But I'm grateful to everyone for the support they've given me." Rei nodded her head and said nothing. "Why did you ask me that?" Usagi asked softly. Rei just shrugged. "Curiosity." Later that night Rei was with Minako in her chamber. "Rei, why did you ask Usagi that question today?" Minako demanded. "You know that Usagi is still hurt. She may not show it but her pain is still there." "I'm sorry Minako." Rei murmured. "But I felt I had to know." "Why?" There was a pause of silence. "Have you seen the way Mamoru looks at her?" Rei said at last. "He's concerned about her. Like the rest of us." "You and I, along with the others all know that he loves her." "What does this have to do with what happened earlier?" "When Mamoru first saw her he fell in love with her. When Mamoru helped Usagi with her grief over Damian, they became closer and he fell deeper in love. He's helping her with her grief again and he's fallen even deeper in love with her. He is completely devoted and madly in love with her." "Go on." Minako said. "Imagine your love for Kunzite. Your love for him gives meaning to your life." Rei continued. "What would you do if your love was unreturned? Your wholehearted love for someone who loves someone else." Minako understood. "I see. Before Hiatus showed up Mamoru loved her but could accept the unreturned love, he could understand that she chose Hiatus instead. But now he loves her even more and I don't think he could accept it if she still chose Hiatus over him." "Exactly, Usagi is our dearest friend, but Mamoru is still a very good friend of ours." Rei said softly. "I don't want to see him get hurt." Minako said nothing and thought about the prince and the princess. A month later, Galen was in the garden talking a walk. He passed by a rose bush and saw Usagi staring at the red roses. "Hello Usagi." He said warmly. Usagi looked and gave a shy smile. "Hello Galen." Usagi was almost back to her normal self. She was more open with the others, and laughed more. But everyone noticed that whenever she smiled, the smile never quite reached her eyes. They always had a haunted, sad look in them. But the others also noticed that when Mamoru was with Usagi, she looked happy and the smile seemed genuine. "What are you doing here?" Galen asked, making conversation. Usagi turned her attention back to the roses. "Just doing some thinking." "What about?" Usagi hesitated before telling Galen. "My feelings for Mamoru." Galen was a bit surprised. He thought. "Do you want to talk about it?" Usagi continued to stare at the roses. "I was always sure that I would always love Mamoru only as a friend, but lately..." Her voice trailed off. Galen listened intently. "When I'm with him, I feel so warm and happy. And I have to wonder if I've fallen in love with him." Her voice grew nervous. "And that scares me." "Would it be so bad if you did love Mamoru?" Galen asked gently. "I'm scared that if I did love him, and I'd end up losing him. Like the way I lost Damian and Hiatus." "Usagi, I can't guarantee that you won't ever lose Mamoru, but I can help you with one thing." Galen said after a long pause. "What's that?" "Do you love Mamoru?" Usagi gave a deep sigh and shook her head. "I don't know." She said with frustration. "I don't know if I think I love him because he's been such a dear friend to me. Or if I do love him and that I'm fooling myself into that I don't because I don't want to get hurt again." Usagi made a strange face at her last sentence. "Was that a complete sentence?" She asked rhetorically. Galen laughed but he could hear the frustration in her voice. "Will you let me help, Usagi?" He asked gently. "Yes Galen, I don't know what to do." "Then close your eyes." Usagi did what he asked. "Forget all of your problems right now." Usagi started to protest. "Trust me." He said in a soothing voice. "Think of a quiet serene place." Inside Usagi's head she imagined the rose garden at night. The stars above lighting up the garden and the flowers shining in the light. "Imagine what it is that makes you complete. What do you see?" Slowly inside Usagi's vision, she saw Mamoru materialize in the garden. Usagi opened her eyes. "Mamoru." She whispered. "He makes me complete." Galen just smiled at her. "I love him." She whispered to Galen. The next few days Usagi stayed in her room, thinking about her new found feelings for Mamoru. She thought. She paced around in her room. She thought with frustration. There was a knock in the door. "Come in." Usagi called out. Mamoru entered. "Hello Mamoru." Usagi said with a slight blush. She thought. "Hello Usagi." Mamoru said with a smile. "I wanted to see if you're all right. You haven't left your room for several days, and I was starting to get worried." "That's sweet of you." Usagi said smiling back. "But there's no need to worry. I've just been doing some thinking lately." She thought. "Do you want to talk about it?" Mamoru asked gently. "I'm not sure if that would help me; it's a little complicated, and I'm stranded in my own confusion." Usagi said with a sheepish smile. Said a nasty voice in her head, answering her previous question. "Let me help?" He asked softly. Usagi froze. Another voice her head urged. "I've been doing some thinking lately, and I discovered something." Usagi said, looking at the floor. Mamoru could hear something in her voice. It sounded like something he had hoped so long for to happen. "What did you discover?" He asked. "I discovered that I, I-" Usagi stammered. Mamoru slowly walked towards her and stood in front of her. His intent blue eyes penetrating into her soul. He could feel her eyes touching his own soul. "What is it?" He whispered. An amazed voice in her head. "I discovered that I-" She tried again. She looked into his eyes and saw his undying love. Mamoru moved closer towards her. The voice was now frantic. "I forgot to study Queen Lacuna for my history exam tomorrow." She said in a rushed and muffled voice. She moved away from him and towards the door. "I should go to the library right away to study." She said scurrying out of the room and leaving a very shocked Mamoru in her room. She ran out of her room and down the empty corridor to the drawing room and locked the door. She sat down on a nearby chair and put her head into her hands. She thought miserably. The next few days Usagi went out of her away to stay from Mamoru. She still felt the embarrassment and couldn't face him yet. Usagi walked into the study and found the Inner Senshi there. She greeted them but she noticed that they answered her with dejected tones. "Is something wrong?" She asked, her brow furrowed in concern. Rei turned her head up to answer the princess. "Sorry princess," She said with a weak smile. "We're just a little sad; we've just learned that Prince Mamoru and the Generals have to return to Earth and won't be back for at least a year." "A year!" Usagi said giving a small jump. This was the first she had heard of such news. "Yes," Ami said lifting her head as well. "Their king has requested that they return so that they can begin their travel to other kingdoms as ambassadors and propose alliances." Usagi thought rapidly. "When do they leave?" She asked in a small voice. "Tomorrow," Minako answered. "But your mother has decided to hold a ball for them this evening." She thought with determination. She looked around the room and saw that the others were still sad. "Does anyone want to join me for a walk in the courtyard?" She asked, hoping to raise their spirits. The others smiled at her and nodded their heads. Usagi stood in front of her mirror that evening, straightening the hem of her gown. Her movements were shaky and nervous, and her mind was focused on something else besides the ball. She thought. There was a knock on the door. "Princess, it's Minako and the others," Came Minako's voice. "Are you ready?" Came a frantic voice in her head. But Usagi forced herself to open the door and smile. "I'm ready." She said in a soft voice. Usagi and the Senshi stood near the throne observing the rest of the ballroom scene. Music filled the air and laughter could be heard all around. Elegant dancers danced to the music, and people were talking happily with one another. The Royal Guards entered the room and walked towards the Senshi. The Outer Senshi smiled at their arrival and the Guards smiled back. Usagi noticed that the Outer Senshi and the Guards gave longing looks to each other and she knew that they wished to go off with each other. "None of you should feel obligated to stay with me," She said smiling. "By all means, go off and enjoy yourselves." The Outer Senshi and Guards gave her an appreciative smile and walked off in pairs. Usagi and the Inner Senshi as they walked off. Rei thought of something and turned to Usagi. "Will that still hold true after Prince Mamoru and the Generals arrive?" Rei asked in a coy voice. Usagi said nothing as she realized that would mean that Mamoru and her would be alone. The others gave teasing laughs. Ami spied out of the corner of her eye that the Generals were walking towards them. She noticed that Mamoru was not among them. The Generals walked towards them and greeted them warmly. "Where's the prince?" Makoto asked Nephrite. "He has some last minute details to take care of for the journey tomorrow." Nephrite answered, taking her hand and kissing it. Usagi knew that the four couples would want to be alone as this would be their last night together for a year. "I'll wait for Mamoru to come," She said smiling at them. "Go and enjoy yourselves." She saw Rei give her a knowing wink as Jadeite and her left. The other couples dispersed and Usagi was left standing by herself. She thought to herself. She started to walk around the room so that she wouldn't look too odd standing in one spot for such a long time. She found herself walking to the courtyard where the rose garden was. She sat down on the bench and admired the still beauty of the night. She closed her eyes and breathed in the sweet scent of the roses. When she opened them she found a beautiful, perfect red rose in front of her eyes. She smiled and looked into the eyes of the person who was in front of her and on bended knee. Usagi's breath caught her in her throat as she realized who it was. Her smile was replaced by a look of shock. "Hiatus." She whispered. Usagi looked at the man who was in front of her with a hopeful and determined smile on his handsome face. "Hiatus," She said after she had regained her composure. "What are you doing here?" "I've come to ask if you'll take me back." Hiatus answered in a solemn voice. "Losing you was the greatest mistake in my life, and I need you in my life so badly." "Hiatus," Usagi said in a shaking voice. "We both decided to end the engagement-" Hiatus cut her off, his voice desperate. "No Usagi, you decided it, I had no choice but to agree with it." Usagi looked at him with her eyes full of sorrow. "Hiatus," She faltered. "I..." She didn't know what to say or do. Here was the man who had broken her heart and yet she couldn't find it in herself to run away from him. "Usagi, I never stopped loving you." His voice persistent. Usagi quickly stood up and tried to leave. "I have to go." She mumbled. But Hiatus held onto her hand, refusing to let go. "Usagi, please." He begged. "I love you more than anything in the world." "I have to go." She mumbled again. Hiatus still refused to release her hand. She looked at his face and was at a loss for words. She thought back to the day when Rei had asked her if she had still loved Hiatus. The words echoed loudly in her head. "Hiatus, please don't make this more difficult than it already is." She said to him. She regretted the words the instant they left her mouth. "It's difficult because you're still in love me, aren't you?" Hiatus asked, pouncing on her words. "You must leave Hiatus," Usagi said in a low voice. "If the Senshi or Guards see you, they won't let you leave unharmed." "You haven't answered my question." He said softly, his eyes searching hers for an answer. She looked frantically around her, looking for a way out of the situation. She looked again at his face and she knew that he wouldn't leave until she answered his question. Galen and Haruka had just finished dancing and were walking in the garden to be alone. "Do you think the princess will ever tell the prince of her true feelings?" Haruka asked Galen. "I think tonight will be very promising..." Galen's voice trailed off as he saw two figures near the rose gardens He recognized instantly the odangos on Usagi's head. He didn't recognize the other figure in the dark. Haruka noticed this as well. "Who do you suppose the princess is with?" She whispered. "I have to go." They both heard the princess mumble. They saw the other figure hold onto her hand tightly. "Usagi, please." They heard him beg. "I love you more than anything in the world." Both Galen and Haruka recognized the voice instantly. "Hiatus." They both whispered fiercely. "What is he doing here?" Galen asked, fighting down his anger. "He's trying to woo her back." Haruka answered, not bothering to hide the disgust in her voice. "I have to go." They heard Usagi mumble again. "Should we do anything?" Haruka asked Galen. Galen was at a complete loss. He knew that they should protect the princess, but he also knew that it was not his place to interrupt such a situation. "Let's just see what happens." He said tersely. They both watched as the scene played before them. "Hiatus, please don't make this more difficult than it already is." "It's difficult because you're still in love with me, aren't you?" Haruka sucked in her breath angrily. She thought with fury. "You must leave Hiatus. If the Senshi or Guards see you, they won't let you leave unharmed." Galen was seething with anger. He thought with an intense surge of anger. "You haven't answered my question." They both saw the princess pause. Haruka suddenly noticed something move in the corner of the garden. She turned her head to see what it was but couldn't see it again. She told herself. Mamoru was walking towards the ballroom. He had just finished replying to a message that his father had sent him. His steps were joyful and happy. He looked forward to seeing the princess, he had planned something very special for tonight. He was fairly certain that she returned his feeling of love, and he had decided after Queen Serenity had told them of the ball that he would tell declare to her his feelings again. The day that he was in her room, he could see it in her eyes, even if she had ran out of the room. He arrived in the ballroom to find many happy people around him, but no Usagi. He thought, walking towards the gardens. He walked closer towards the bench in the garden, his thoughts happy and joyful. He slowed his pace when he realized that others were in the garden. He instantly saw the odangos and a smile leapt to his face. As he neared, he could hear their voices. At first he was too far to clearly hear the words, but as he neared he could hear the words perfectly. "Hiatus, please don't make this more difficult than it already is." Mamoru heard Usagi say. His smile left his face. "It's difficult because you're still in love with me, aren't you?" He heard Hiatus say. Mamoru felt his heart stop beating. "You must leave Hiatus. If the Senshi or Guards see you, they won't let you leave unharmed." "You haven't answered my question." He heard Hiatus say in a soft tone. Mamoru thought. He saw Usagi stand up straight and look Hiatus in the eyes. "We were engaged once, so I will tell you the truth." She said softly. "Part of me still loves you." Mamoru felt his heart go still, void of any feeling. He left immediately, not wanting to hear anymore. Usagi calmed herself and collected her composure. She thought. She straightened herself and looked Hiatus in the eyes. "We were engaged once, so I will tell you the truth." She said softly. "Part of me still loves you." She thought she heard something rustle in the shadows. She thought. She turned her attention back to Hiatus. She saw the hope in his eyes, and she felt terrible that she would be hurting him for what she was about to say next. "But that love is just a memory and it lives in the past. Time has passed and I love Prince Mamoru of Earth." She saw the hope flicker from his eyes. Hiatus turned around. "I understand Usagi." He whispered softly. "I'll not come near you again." He quietly left the garden. Usagi sat down on the bench after he left, feeling exhausted. Haruka and Galen watched Hiatus leave the garden, leaving Usagi and the rose he had given her behind. They heard a soft sigh from Usagi. They saw her sit back down on the bench with the rose in her hand. "We should find Mamoru." Haruka whispered to Galen. The two quietly left from their spot in search of Mamoru. Haruka and Galen walked back inside and found Rei and Jadeite talking with Michiru and Ashe. "Have any of you seen Mamoru?" Galen asked. They foursome shook their heads. A voice spoke up behind them. The group turned towards the voice and found Hotaru and Drake with Logan and Setsuna. "We just saw Mamoru a few moments ago." Hotaru said. "He was walking towards his quarters saying that he had something to take care of." Haruka gave a frustrated sigh. "What's wrong?" Ashe asked. Galen quickly explained what they had seen in the rose garden. "Hiatus is here?" Came a voice after Galen had told what happened. The group turned around to find Ami and Zoisite, Makoto and Nephrite and Minako and Kunzite. "Where's Usagi?" Ami asked. "She's still in the garden." Galen said. "Perhaps we should go get Mamoru so that he can talk to her?" Ami suggested. Kunzite nodded his head in agreement. "We'll go to his quarters." Kunzite and Minako left in the direction of Mamoru's room. Mamoru was in his room sitting on a chair near the window and staring at the night sky before him. All he could think about was what he had seen in the garden. Usagi and Hiatus alone together. Usagi declaring her love for Hiatus. The scene played over in his head. The words rang cruelly in his head. He thought miserably. He continued to stare blankly at the uncaring sky, feeling his heart starting to grow dull from the pain. There was a knock at the door. He quickly regained his composure and buried his feelings deep within him. He walked to the door and opened it; outside stood Kunzite and Minako. "Mamoru," Minako said. "Why aren't you at the ball?" "I have to take care of some preparations for tomorrow's journey." Mamoru said, his voice not showing how he felt. "Perhaps you should come," Kunzite said. "Usagi-" Mamoru cut him off, not wanting to hear the rest of the sentence. "I'm very sorry, but I have important matters to attend to." Mamoru said, his voice still calm and collected. "But-" Minako protested. "Please give my apologies to everyone, but I can't come." Mamoru said, closing the door. Kunzite and Minako were left standing outside his door and feeling stunned. Usagi sat on the bench, the scene playing through her mind. She thought. She sat on the bench a moment longer. Her head rose as she suddenly remembered something. She stood up quickly and ran inside to the ball. Usagi looked around the ball, but couldn't find Mamoru's face anywhere. She spied her friends and walked towards them. As she neared them she saw Kunzite and Minako walk towards the group with puzzled looks on their faces. They spoke to the group and the rest of the group had puzzled looks on their faces as well. "Is something wrong?" Usagi asked when she neared the group. The group snapped out of their confused haze and smiled at her. "Hello Usagi." Galen said. "Kunzite and Minako just talked to Mamoru, he said that he won't be able to come tonight." The puzzled look came back onto his face. Usagi blinked. "Oh." She said in a soft voice. She thought. But another voice in her head interrupted her. The voice said loudly. A look of determination flashed in her eyes. Usagi turned her attention back to the group. "Do you know where I can find Mamoru?" She asked. "I have something important to tell him." "He was in his quarters when we talked to him." Minako said. "Thank you, I must talk to him now." Usagi said, leaving the group. "Do you think she'll tell him that Hiatus was here?" Makoto whispered to the group. "Who knows what will happen." Rei responded. Usagi found herself standing outside Mamoru's door and staring at the doorknob. She thought. She raised her hand and knocked hesitantly. There was no answer. She knocked again. Still no answer. She was about to turn around and leave when she heard a sad sigh inside the room. She quietly turned the knob and walked quietly in. She saw that Mamoru was hunched over the window sill and staring out into the night. "Mamoru?" She called out softly. She saw Mamoru give a small jump. He turned his head toward her and she could see his eyes; she saw a look of joy flicker in his eyes, then flicker out. Mamoru stood up and walked toward her. "Usagi, I was just about to leave my room." He said in a voice that gave away nothing. "I was about to go to the study and take care of some details for the trip tomorrow." "You're not coming to the ball?" Usagi felt coldness emanating from Mamoru. "I'm sorry princess, but I have to take care of things first." "Oh." Usagi looked down at the floor. The voice in her head commanded. "Before you go Mamoru, there's something I want to tell you." She said in a faltering voice. "Could it wait until tomorrow?" Mamoru asked while hiding his eyes. "I'm very busy and I must take care of things first." "Mamoru," Usagi said softly. Mamoru didn't seem to hear her. He gave her a parting glance and left the room. Usagi stood there and watched with an open mouth as Mamoru left. "I love you." She said to the empty room. Mamoru walked out the room and headed toward another section of the palace. He thought. He found an empty room and locked the door behind him. He sat near the window and looked at the sky. Usagi stared at the door, not quite believing what had just happened. She moved towards the door and left the room. She thought numbly as she headed towards her room. She reached her room and sat on her bed. She felt a tear roll down her cheek. She wiped it away. Another tear fell down, she wiped it away as well. Another tear followed. She soon gave into the pressure and started to cry. The next morning, Usagi, the Senshi and the Guards gathered at the platform to say good-bye to Mamoru and the Generals. Everyone noticed that the prince and princess were being very formal and distant to each other. "What's going on?" Rei whispered to Minako as Usagi and Mamoru bowed stiffly to each other. "I don't know, neither of them returned to the ball last night and this morning they were cold to one another." They watched as Mamoru and the Generals boarded the vessel and the door closed. Galen turned his head and noticed the carefully placed blank look on Usagi's face, but the look in her eyes was unmistakable. He watched Usagi walk back inside to the palace and ran to catch up to her. "Don't look so sad." Galen said. "He's gone." Usagi said in a dull voice. He put her hand on Usagi's shoulder and gave her supportive smile. "He'll be back." Galen said in a soothing voice. "I never got a chance to tell him my feelings last night." Usagi continued. "He was so cold and didn't even want to hear what I had to say to him." "You'll get another chance to tell him." Galen said, hoping to make her smile. "I don't think so, something has changed between us. I don't know what has changed but I know that things won't go back to the way they were." Galen was speechless and could only pat Usagi on the shoulder in comfort. "It's a little ironic," Usagi said with a bitter laugh. "Hiatus appears last night saying that he loves me, but I tell him that I don't want him. Then Mamoru, the man I do want, doesn't even want to listen to me." Galen gave her a comforting hug and smile. "Everything will be all right." He said. Usagi looked at him. "You don't seem surprised by the fact that Hiatus was here last night." She commented. "We all know what happened last night." Galen said in a solemn voice. Usagi just nodded her head and continued walking. Everyone was too preoccupied to notice the small stream of smoke starting to trail the vessel. Mamoru was sitting in a chair aboard the vessel, his face blank but his eyes turbulent. Zoisite was sitting next to him and was trying to decipher why Mamoru was acting so morose. "Do you want to talk about it?" He asked softly. "There's nothing to talk about." Mamoru said darkly. "I expect that Usagi and Hiatus will be married within the year." Zoisite's eyebrows jumped into his hairline as he tried to understand what Mamoru had just said. "What are you talking about? Usagi and Hiatus have no intentions on getting married." Zoisite sputtered out. "They're no longer together." "Until last night, that's what I thought." Mamoru muttered. "What are you talking about?" Zoisite demanded. "Did you know that Hiatus was at the ball last night?" Mamoru said evenly. "Yes, we all do." Zoisite said, still not understanding. "But I don't see how-" "You knew that Hiatus was there? Then you should know what happened." "You're not making any sense." "Usagi told Hiatus that she still loved him." "Yes that's true, but-" "What's not to understand? I love her but she still loves Hiatus." At this point Zoisite was holding his head in his hand trying to piece together the information. "Why do you look so confused Zoisite? You know what happened last night between Hiatus and Usagi." Zoisite looked at Mamoru with an incredulous stare. "Mamoru, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about." Zoisite said slowly. "And I have only one question for you." "What question would that be?" "Have you gone insane?" "What kind of question is that?" Kunzite walked over to the pair with a questioning look on his face. "What are you two arguing about?" He asked. "Mamoru thinks that Hiatus and Usagi will be getting married." Zoisite said shaking his head. Kunzite blinked. "Come again?" He asked. "Mamoru knows that Hiatus was with Usagi last night but he thinks that they've become re-engaged." Kunzite thought for a moment and started to get an inking of what had happened last night. "Mamoru, explain to us what happened last night." "I was looking for Usagi in the rose garden and I saw Usagi and Hiatus together, and I happened to overhear part of their conversation." "What did you hear?" Zoisite asked carefully. Mamoru told the two what he had heard and at the end of his explanation the two were looking at him with shocked expressions. "And that's all you heard? You didn't hear anything else after that?" Zoisite stammered out. "Yes, now do you understand what I'm saying?" Kunzite looked at him with a serious gaze. "You left before Usagi finished talking to Hiatus." "Why would I have stayed? She loves Hiatus, Hiatus loves her." "If you had stayed you would've heard her say that even though she loves Hiatus, that love is a memory for her," Kunzite said in a grave voice. "She told Hiatus that she loves you." Mamoru felt his heart lurch and his breaths draw short. "What?" He whispered. "Usagi loves you. She was planning on telling you last night." Zoisite said. "Tell Jadeite and Nephrite to turn the ship around." Was all Mamoru said. Kunzite nodded his head and started off to the direction of the helm controls. He had only taken a step when Nephrite ran into the room. "The engine is on fire, and we can't put it out." Usagi was in her room and reading a book by the window. As she turned the page, she heard an urgent knock on the door. "Come in." She called out while walking towards the door. Galen came in, his face extremely grave and serious. "Galen, what's wrong?" Usagi demanded. "Prince Mamoru's vessel crashed an hour ago into a forest south of the palace." Usagi paled and held onto a nearby chair for support. "How, how bad are the injuries?" She asked weakly. "Kunzite and Zoisite both have severely broken bones and fractures in the skull." Galen said in the same grave voice. "Jadeite has a severe concussion and Nephrite has massive internal bleeding." "And Mamoru?" Usagi said bravely. "Is he alive?" Galen nodded his head. Usagi felt her heart start to beat again, "But he's in a coma." Galen said softly. "We're unsure if he'll awake." Usagi remained strangely still and calm. "Are you all right?" Galen said, moving towards her. "I want to see him." She said softly. When Usagi reached the infirmary, the healers were hovering over the bodies of the five men. "I want to see Mamoru." She demanded to the closest healer. "I'm sorry Princess." The healer murmured. "But we can't have anyone here right now, we must stabilize their conditions first." Usagi stared at the healer, refusing to move. "Come on Usagi." Galen whispered to her. "We'll wait outside." He guided her gently out of the room. Usagi leaned against a wall, her eyes looking at the floor. She seemed to be murmuring to herself. "Damian, Hiatus, and now Mamoru." She said softly. She heard several footsteps walking down the corridor. She looked up and found the tear-stricken faces of the Inner Senshi. "How are you doing Usagi?" Minako asked, wiping away her tears. "Don't cry," Usagi said softly. "None of them would like us to be so sad." "Hypocrite." Rei said in a kind but chiding voice through her tears. "You have tears on your face as well." Usagi gave a weak, tired smile and forced out a strangled laugh. "We just have to have to have hope." She told them. "Just hope and pray." For the next few days everyone was on the edge and jumpy. The slightest rumor on the men's condition would send everyone running towards the infirmary. The healers still would not allow visitors to the men. Everyone had to settle for taking quick glances through the door before the healers closed it. Three weeks later, good news finally came from the infirmary. Zoisite and Kunzite could finally sit up properly in bed. Ami and Minako were the first ones through the door when the healers had announced that the two men could have visitors. Zoisite was attempting to sit up in his bed and painfully failing. He winced as his body gave into the pain that spread throughout his body. "Don't be so foolish; you need your rest." Came a sweet and gentle voice. Zoisite looked up and saw the sweet face of his angel. "Ami." He breathed. Ami forgot her self-composure and gave him a fierce hug. "Zoisite, I didn't think you'd make it." She said through tears. Zoisite ignored the pain Ami's massive hug was causing and concentrated on soothing her. "Everything will be alright." He said softly giving her a kiss on her forehead. Kunzite had his eyes closed, hoping that the throbbing sensation in his head would stop. He heard quiet footsteps approach him and he could sense that the person was beside him watching him intently. He slowly opened his eyes and found Minako's blue eyes looking at him. "You're awake." She smiled softly. He saw the smile and the pain was forgotten "Nothing could keep me away from you." He replied, but the throbbing in his head continued once more. "What's wrong?" She asked immediately. "My head is pounding." He said grimacing. A mischievous light entered her eyes. "I know how to make it go away." She said slyly. Kunzite's eyes opened wide. "That's really not necessary." He said hastily. It was known throughout the palace that Minako's healing skills usually left the patient feeling worse then before. "Are you sure?" Her eyes still had the mischievous glint. "Quite sure." He nodding his head, then winced as his head pounded louder than before. "I'll do it anyway." She said, noticing his facial expression. Kunzite started to protest but soon found her lips on his. The pounding in his head was soon replaced by the pounding in his heart. The rest of the Senshi were outside and several were pacing back and forth. Usagi, Rei and Makoto were happy that Zoisite and Kunzite were all right, but they felt slightly envious. Galen came up to Usagi and gave her a supportive hug. "Don't lose hope." He whispered. She looked at him and mouthed the words 'thank you' to him. The next week, the Usagi, Rei and Makoto were outside the infirmary. They had received word that someone's condition had improved and would make a full recovery. "Please don't let any of them die." Rei prayed. "Please don't let Jadeite die, I promise I'll never lose my temper again." Makoto approached her quietly. "Rei." She said softly. "What?" She snapped. Makoto smiled at her. "I heard your prayer." "So?" Rei said in an annoyed voice. "This is the last time you'll be ever to lose your temper at me." Rei looked confused for a moment, then understanding dawned her face. "Jadeite?" She said, holding her breath. Makoto nodded her head. "Jadeite." Rei whispered when she neared him on the bed. Jadeite was covered in bandages and his face had bruises on it. "Rei." He said with a happy but tired smile. Rei gently picked up his hand and started to cry softly. "I thought I'd never see you again." He looked at her lovingly and his hand touched her face. "You can't get rid of me that easily, we're stuck together for the rest of our lives." Rei gave him a gentle tap on his head. "You tease." She said smiling through her joyous tears. "Ow! Not on the head!" Jadeite cried out. "Oh!" Rei had forgotten about his concussion. "Sorry!" Another two weeks later in the evening, Makoto was in Usagi's room and the two were keeping each company and moping about together. Ami, Minako and Rei were with their loved ones in the infirmary, helping them make a full recovery. The healers were still uncertain on the conditions of Mamoru and Nephrite, which caused no end to the worry Usagi and Makoto had. "Do you think it's possible that one of them won't make it?" Makoto asked Usagi hesitantly. "Don't think like that." Usagi said in a comforting voice. "Believe in the healers and believe in the love that you share with Neprhite. There is a very strong link between the two of you and it would take more than this to sever it." "Thank you Usagi, but it's just that I don't know what I would do if I lost Nephrite." Makoto said while wiping away a tear that was in her eye. "Just don't lose hope." Usagi said, repeating the words that Galen had told her. "Nephrite has taught you the way of the stars. The stars are constant and so should your hope." "I think I've lost my hope Usagi." Makoto said crying. "I know I shouldn't but it's been too long." "Makoto," Usagi said while taking her hand and leading her towards the window. "Look at the sky, and tell me what you see." "Stars." Makoto whispered. "Only when they do not shine is there no hope." Usagi told her softly. "Believe in the stars. Follow the stars and you will find your hope." "Thank you Usagi." Makoto said, giving her a fierce hug. Usagi hugged her back but her thoughts were in turmoil. She thought. There was a knock on the door. "Makoto, are you in there?" Came Ashe's voice. "I've just been to the infirmary. Nephrite is going to be alright." Makoto gave a cry of joy and leapt up towards the door. "Thank you so much Usagi." She said through tears of joy. "I should've never doubted." "Thank me later, Nephrite is waiting for you." Usagi said with a waving motion of her hand. Makoto walked into the room where Nephrite was and saw him sleeping gently, his chest rising up and down in a steady motion. Makoto said as tears started to fall. She sat by his bed and started to softly cry. Nephrite stirred at the sound and found Makoto with her head down and weeping. He raised his hand and brought it gently down on her face. "Why are you crying my angel?" He asked in a whisper. "I'm alright now." Makoto looked up and the tears started to come out faster. "I feel so ashamed." She whispered. "I lost hope and I started to doubt." Nephrite gently stroked her cheek and gave her a smile. "As long as the stars shine, there will always be hope." "I know that now." Makoto said taking hold of his hand. "A very wise person told me that." Usagi was in her room and looking at the stars which shone with such brilliance. She told herself fervently. She stood up and walked around the room, hoping that her anxiety would leave her. She paced around her room a few times and sat back down again. She left her room and walked to the infirmary where Mamoru was and silently entered his room. His head had a white bandage covering it and his arms were covered with cuts. Usagi's heart saddened when she saw him. She thought while sitting in the chair next to his bed. She looked at him and his sleeping face. "Hello Mamoru." She whispered in a soft voice. "It's me, Usagi, I wish that you could hear me." Usagi started to fall into a deep conversation with Mamoru's comatose body as if he could really hear her. "Don't worry about the Generals, they've all recovered. The Inner Senshi are very happy about that." She whispered. "I'm happy for all of them, they all love each other very much." Usagi looked at Mamoru's face and smiled. "I'm glad that all the Generals have recovered because to be honest I'm not sure if the Senshi could handle their deaths. I'm not saying that they're weak, but they have a very strong bond with their loved ones. If that bond were to be destroyed I don't think they could stand the pain." Usagi looked at Mamoru with tears in her eyes. "Mamoru, that includes me as well. If you don't make it, I wouldn't be able to stand the pain. Please don't leave me, I need you so badly." She said holding his hand. "And I don't mean just as a friend. You're my closest friend but I love you so much more than that. I love you and I want to be with you." She was silent for a while before she spoke again. "Please don't leave me." She held his hand a moment longer before standing up to leave. As she left the room, Mamoru's face started to move. As if he had understood the entire conversation. Mamoru was in a dark room with no light anywhere. Fog and mist surrounded him and there seemed to be no exit. Mamoru thought to himself. He sat down on the ground and put his hand to his head. He thought. He stood up in frustration and paced around. A small stream of light started to enter the dark room. "Don't worry about the Generals, they've all recovered. The Inner Senshi are very happy about that." He heard a voice whisper. Mamoru said with realization. "Usagi!" Mamoru cried. "Can you hear me?" "I'm happy for all of them, they all love each other very much." Usagi's voice continued. "Usagi!" Mamoru cried again. "I'm glad that all the Generals have recovered because to be honest I'm not sure of the Senshi could handle their deaths. I'm not saying that they're weak, but they have a very strong bond with their loved ones. If that bond were to be destroyed I don't think they could stand the pain." The stream of light started to get brighter and turned into an image. Mamoru could see Usagi sitting next a bed with a body in it. Mamoru took a closer looked and jumped. His mine raced for an explanation. Mamoru looked at the image and smiled sadly at Usagi. "Mamoru, that includes me as well. If you don't make it, I wouldn't be able to stand the pain. Please don't leave me, I need you so badly." Mamoru eyes widened. "And I don't mean just as a friend. You're my closest friend but I love you so much more than that. I love you and I want to be with you." Mamoru's heart soared with elation. He watched as Usagi held his hand. "Please don't leave me." He thought with determination. This continued for several more nights. Usagi talking to Mamoru's body and Mamoru listening to her sweet voice. Each night Usagi held his hand and promised that she would love him forever and each night Mamoru promised that he would find a way back to the other world. Usagi was in Mamoru's room and talking to him as she had done for the past week. But this night was different, Usagi was crying heartfelt tears and couldn't stop. "Mamoru, I have something to confess." She whispered through her tears. "I've started to lose hope. I know I told the others not to lose hope but I can't help myself." Her tears wouldn't stop. "I'm losing hope because I don't know if I'll ever get the chance to tell you how I feel. I love you so much and I don't want to be without you." She laid her head down near his arms and lost herself in her tears. She was crying so heavily that she didn't notice Mamoru's arms start to move. "I'm losing hope because I don't know if I'll ever get the chance to tell you how I feel. I love you so much and I don't want to be without you." Mamoru heard Usagi's words and felt his heart ache. His mind pleaded. He said clenching his jaw. He suddenly felt light-headed and dizzy. He fell to the ground holding his head trying to stop the dizziness. The blackness surrounded him and swallowed him. He opened his eyes and to his surprise he found himself in a bed and in a white room with the light of the stars shining through the windows. He heard soft painful crying near his hand and he lowered his head. The single thought was overwhelming. Mamoru moved his heavy arm and carefully picked up Usagi's hand. Usagi looked at his hand with surprise and raised her head. Her eyes widened and her mouth fell open. She felt a warm hand on her own hand and looked down. She found her small hand in his and marveled at how safe she suddenly felt. She looked up and her breath caught in her throat. "Mamoru?" Usagi whispered. She could hardly believe the sight on front of her. Mamoru was looking down at her and smiling. ?You?re all right.? She continued to look at him with amazement. "Could you help me sit up?" Mamoru's voice asked, breaking her out of her reverie. She smiled and gently eased him up into a sitting position. The two looked each other for a moment before Usagi looked down. She saw that her hand was still in his hand and she felt her heart start to pound wildly. Usagi looked up into found herself staring into Mamoru's deep blue eyes. "We've all missed you." She whispered. She lowered her head and in an even softer whisper she added something. "I've missed you." She felt Mamoru other hand gently tilt her head up and she found herself looking into his deep eyes again. "I know." He said with a soft smile. "While I was asleep I was in a dark room but I could hear your voice whenever you talked to me. I could see your image as well, and whenever I did, the darkness in the room lessened." Usagi gave a small blush and looked down. When she looked up again Mamoru could see the hope and love shine clearly through her eyes. "Then you know how I feel?" She whispered. For an answer Mamoru gently pulled her forward and kissed her softly on the lips. The kiss was sweet and the two stayed together for a while before pulling apart. "I know that this is hardly the place but Princess Serenity," Mamoru whispered. "You are my life, our souls are twined together for eternity, will you spend the rest of your life with me?" "Prince Endymion, I would be honored to spend the rest of my life with yours." Usagi responded softly. The pair leaned forward and sealed their oath with a kiss. Outside Rei and Makoto returned to the eager crowd waiting. "Well?" Galen asked with a smile. Rei and Makoto looked at each other and smiled. "Do you think we should tell them?" Rei asked slyly. "I don't know," Makoto said, going along with the game. "After all, that would be gossiping." "Tell us!" The group demanded. Makoto gave a dramatic pause before smiling happily. "There's to be a wedding!" She announced. The cheers were deafening. Mamoru and Usagi had just finished their kiss when they heard the cheers. "I think they've been spying on us." Usagi laughed. Mamoru gave her a wink and smiled. "Then let's give the something to talk about." He said with a mischievous grin. "Shall we?" "Let's." Usagi responded with the same mischievous smile. Mamoru and Usagi leaned forward and gave each other a kiss that threatened to cause the two of them to pass out. The cheers and laughter continued outside the room. The End Well, what did you think?
