Title: Heartbreak Author: Blue Ice E-mail: Blue_IceSM@hotmail.com Rated: (PG.) Hi, Happy Late...late Valentine's Day! I normally don't write short stories. But this was just one of those spur of the moment fanfics. I guess I'm kind of tired of writing long chapters. Well, thanks so much for putting up with me. I know you all are waiting for the next part to A Part of You and Me. I'm terribly sorry for the delay, but I've been so busy with school lately. I promise as soon as Spring break comes, I'll be able to continue it. Well, enjoy! Serena's POV. I glanced out of the window. Must have been the hundredth time I did that since I came in. Where could he be? Just as I sighed, the doorbell jingled and I looked up expectedly. No, it wasn't him. I looked down dejectedly again as I held the thin piece of paper in my hand. What would he say when I give him this? "Hey, Serena!" "Hi Mina." I replied with a small smile as she sat down across from me. "Someone's a little perky today." I giggled, watching her with amusement. "You are now talking to the official girlfriend of Andrew Furahata!" She exclaimed as she raised her arm, showing a glamorous silver bracelet. "No way!" I gasped as I shot up from my seat and stared down at her thin wrist. "It's an early Valentine's Day gift." She beamed happily. My smile immediately dropped at the subject of Valentine's Day. I had really hoped that everyone would just stop talking about it. Who made up such a stupid holiday anyway? "Something wrong?" Mina asked as she leaned toward me. I laughed slightly and shook my head. I didn't speak for a while. Then suddenly, tears filled my eyes. With a worried frown, Mina sat up to comfort me. "Serena. Why are you so sad?" She asked me. Not being able to help it, I let out a small whimper. "I don't have a Valentine." I replied quickly and wiped away the single tear that escaped my eye. This was really embarrassing now. "Oh I'm sorry for rubbing that in. But Valentine's Day isn't until next Monday. You have more than enough time to find a date for the dance." Oh the dance! I moaned slightly. Just the thought of going alone made me sink another foot lower. "Honestly Mina. You can't just find someone in days. It never works that way." I replied. Just then, Andrew strolled over to us and plopped down beside Mina. She gave him a quick kiss on the cheek before turning her attention back to me. I could tell from the way she was fidgeting that it was beginning to get awkward. "I'm fine really. Just one of those weekly crisis. You know me." I laughed to indicate that she should stop worrying. "Go, go have fun!" I finally screamed at them when they kept on staring at me doubtfully. "You sure Serena?" Andrew asked. I looked up with a smile. "Yes, positive. Now go before I change my mind." Without another word, the couple stood up. And after saying a quick goodbye, they left together in his car. Alright. My life is officially over. When did I became such a looser? All this time, I've been setting up everyone so they'll have someone for Valentines Day. And what do I get? Nothing. I sighed again as I looked at my watch. He's not coming. My eyes were quickly filling up with tears again. This is stupid. I shouldn't cry over such a stupid thing. I kept on telling myself to be brave. But, with everything so hectic in my life, I don't know if I could keep it up anymore. Turning around, I walked toward the exit, my head bowed dejectedly as I stepped up to the electric sliding doors of the Crown Center Arcade. "Hey, Meatball Head? Watch where you're going!" My head shot up abruptly at his voice. It's him! He's here! I froze dead in my spot as my gaze traveled from the middle of his chest to his handsome face. Boy, he's tall. I stuttered for a few seconds before putting up the face I always carried when I see him. "Shut up Darien. I'm not in the mood to argue with you today. I'm meeting someone and I'm late." I replied casually, even though I knew my voice was quivering. He laughed mockingly before looking down to me with his deep blue eyes. Immediately I felt my legs turn jelly. "Oh really?" he grinned, his voice low and taunting. "Who?" I stood blankly for a moment. I didn't expect him to ask me that. "Uh...it...it's none of your business." I replied. He nodded with a quirky grin. Why does he always have be such a jerk? I was honestly at a loss for words. Here he is, the man I've had my heart set on, and all that ever happens between us is endless bickering, each trying to outdo the other. I'm getting nowhere. "Have a good day, Darien." I smiled warmly up to him. I couldn't let him see through my true feelings. I wouldn't have been able to stand straight if he did. Then, unexpectedly, even to myself, I stood on tiptoes and whispered in his ear. "It's always a pleasure...running into you." With that said, I straightened up my skirt and walked out. I could tell from the dark form of his tall body that he was still standing at the entrance. And somehow, I felt like he was watching me through the glass doors. I shook my head again. That'll be the day. Darien's POV. I watched awestruck as she left. That was strange. She has never said that meeting me was a pleasure. Then again, there are a lot of things I don't know about her. I shrugged slightly as I made my way to a booth close to a corner of the café® My gaze unknowing fell on a piece of red paper. I picked it up from the table curiously and opened it. "Dear someone...You are cordially invited to attend a special event on February 14th, Valentine's day...." I chuckled as I continued to read aloud. It was indeed an invitation to a party held at Juuban Gala Hall. I flipped the 3 by 5 paper to the back and to my surprise, it was signed Serena Tsukino. Could she be possibly inviting someone to this dance. I didn't know why, but suddenly, I had the urge to kill. She did say she was meeting someone and that she was late. Maybe the invitation was for that someone. Probably some popular guy at her school who she has a crush on. I sighed inwardly as I stared at the card in interest. What if I was to show up at this party? I mean whoever this was for can't go now because I have the invitation. Now how she got to be included in this private party was definitely puzzling. She was only in high school and couldn't possibly know anyone important in Tokyo. I chuckled to myself at the thought of her shocked face when I'd see her at the gala. She'd probably get so mad, and her lips would quiver unknowingly, her eyes glaring...wait a minute! When did I pay so much attention to how she reacts around me? I shook my head with wonder. Leaning back against the seat, I closed my eyes and thought deeply to myself. I remembered the first time I met her. Actually my best friend Andrew had introduced her to me about two summers ago. She was only 15 then. My first impression was that she was such just another carefree high school girl. Then the more I got to see her, the more radiant and beautiful she seemed. I moved away for a year to attend a special program for med. School in Nagano. When I returned just two months ago, I almost didn't recognize her when we had ran into each other on the streets. She was absolutely gorgeous. And I have to give her credit for being so much mature. Food and friends weren't the only things that mattered to her anymore. Did I really miss that much? Then I just had to bring up the fact that her hair looked like meatballs. I think that's what got us started with all the bickering from the beginning. I meant to compliment her hair, but when she looked up to me with those pale eyes, I was at a loss for words. And I knew for a fact that if I didn't say anything insulting, I'd be in a deep trap. As if I'm not in one right now. "Darien? You're coffee." I opened my eyes to find Andrew's little sister Lizzy standing before me, with a tray in her hands. I smiled politely before accepting the cup and thanking her. It'd definitely be a surprise if I showed up at the party. No one would ever expect it. I've always turned down every invitation given to me from the past few years. I preferred to spend holidays alone. What's the use of going when there's no one to share the special occasions with. And who invented Valentine's Day anyway. It's such a stupid holiday. I turned to look out a window as I thought to myself. The doorbell suddenly ringed and I saw Andrew walk into the arcade with Mina, his new girlfriend. They seemed to care for each other a lot. "Hey, Darien!" I nodded with a smile as they approached me. "That's where Serena was sitting today, all depressed." Mina commented with a shrug. "Serena? Depressed? Doesn't really sound like her." I replied with a chuckle. Mina sat down with a sigh. "It's such a shame that the dance is only days away and she hasn't found anyone to go with." She said as Andrew sat down next to her. I sat up suddenly. "This dance thing. It's held at the Juuban..." "Gala Hall." Mina finished for me, nodding her head for emphasis. "How did she ever get tickets?" I asked. Mina giggled. "Oh, her dad is covering the dance for the newspaper and he received free tickets. But at the last moment, he was switched to cover the presidential elections in Okinawa. So...Serena invited all of us to go. VIP list thing." She added. "In matter of fact, she had one left and was thinking about inviting someone...but she didn't say who." Mina looked blank for a second. "Hey Darien. Why don't you come with us. I'm sure Serena wouldn't mind giving it to you." Andrew suggested. Mina burst out laughing when he said that. "What's so funny?" I asked, slightly hurt. "Are you kidding? Why would Darien want to spend Valentine's Day with Serena? They can't even get along for two seconds!" She shook her head at Andrew. He only shrugged. "Well, I guess you're right." Hey! Where do I get a say in this?! Then I suddenly remembered the invitation in my pocket. "Actually," I smiled. "I've already been invited, by someone else. And I'm going anyway." They both looked at me in shock. I'm not that antisocial, am I? "You've never attended these social functions, Darien." Andrew chuckled. "You sure you're up for it?" I grinned lopsidedly. "Hey, you gotta get out once in a while." I replied. "Good perspective, Darien. You should have done that a long time ago." We joked on for a while until Andrew had to go back to his shift. Mina stayed behind to talk to me. I really didn't mind her company. "I know you don't know Serena that well. But, I'm really worried about her." She began. "Lately, she's been kind of down, and somehow she's ...she's..." "Different?" I asked. Mina nodded in agreement. "I ran into her a while ago and I've noticed that she wasn't acting like herself. You have any idea why?" Mina leaned back into her seat, and I could tell that her eyes had suddenly sadden. "Well, I'm not sure if I should tell anyone, but they just found out that her brother, Sammy has cancer. It...it hasn't developed to the stage where it can't be cured. But still, her whole family's been pretty uptight since then. And Serena's grades have dropped drastically. She can hardly concentrate in school. It's sad to see her struggle after doing so well." I nodded my head understandingly as Mina continued on. I had no idea that Serena was going through such a tough time. And then today, when we ran into each other by the entrance, I wasn't even decent enough to greet her cordially. "I was such a jerk today." I mumbled out suddenly, interrupting Mina. She looked up me strangely before speaking again. "You care about her don't you?" She asked me. I looked up with a sigh. There was no point denying it. "Is it that obvious?" She chuckled slightly before taking a sip of her drink. "Actually you've been covering it up pretty well for the last two months." My eyes bulged out of their sockets as I choked on my coffee. "What?" I spat out. She only giggled. "Oh, don't what me. I always know these little games you guys play around each other. Face it, you like her, a lot." I had to chuckle. "Alright, you win." I said as I sunk back into my seat. "This is so perfect. Now you can take her to the dance. I know she's dying to go. And it'd be such a nice surprise if you'd show up at her door steps and ask her." Mina batted her eyelashes playfully. I had to laugh at that. "You've never changed, Mina." I chuckled as I looked at her rosy cheeks. "But, you have." She replied, this time seriously. It's been over ten years since we've been friends. Ever since we were in grade school. I was in fifth grade though, when she was still in kindergarten. And even at that time, I've treated her like my own sister. She and Andrew are the only two people in this world that knows about my parents' death. And I have every intention of keeping it that way between the three of us. "Oh look at the time, I better go." She stretched with a yawn. "Don't tell me you're going to bed already." I smiled. "Nope, I'm going to Rei's house for a study meeting. Then Serena and I are going shopping for new gowns to wear. Oh and by the way, you have to wear a black tuxedo. Don't you know that's a lady killer, especially on you?" She laughed jokingly before gathering her things. "Yeah, yeah, see you later." I waved her off. Before leaving the booth, Mina looked down to me, her expression meaningful. "Darien, I mean it, about taking Serena to that dance. I think she'd really like that. Just keep that in mind ok?" She asked with a smile. I nodded to reassure her. "If anything, I'll be lucky if she says yes." With a chuckle, she left to say goodbye to Andrew. Narrator POV. "So, you going to do it?" "Rei! Don't pressure him!" Lita nudged Rei with her elbow. Darien sighed as the girls surrounded him with a million and one questions. "Stop bothering him guys. He needs time to think to himself." Ami added. You can always count on Ami. Rei and Lita turned to their blue haired friend with a sweat drop. "Sorry." Rei apologized sheepishly. "Oh and you had to tell everyone." Darien glared at Mina as she smiled innocently. "I didn't tell Serena." She replied with a grin. "Anyway, tomorrow's Sunday and you don't have that much time. She's even thinking about not going. Come on Darien, it's now or never." Mina pressed on. "Alright, alright, I'll do it, tonight." Darien sighed as he leaned back against the booth. The doorbell jingled again and this time a couple walked in hand in hand. "Hey guys!" Serena waved happily. Darien immediately sat up as he spotted someone else with her. It was a guy. "Serena...Josh...what... what's going on?" Lita asked as they walked toward them. "We're going to the gala together. Josh just asked me this morning." Serena replied as she smiled up to him. He was pretty cute, with brown hair and a beautiful pair of deep green eyes. Everyone became silent. "Oh hi...Darien." Her eyes met Darien's briefly before turning to the rest of the group. "I didn't know you guys were friends with him." Serena said, if a bit awkwardly. "Actually, we've all known him for a long time now." Rei replied as she looked across the table at Darien. He didn't say anything but continued to glare at Josh. Lita coughed slightly and smiled up to the couple. "I'm glad you found a date for the dance. Want to join us for some ice cream?" She asked. Serena and Josh looked at each other before sliding into the round both, squishing Darien right in the middle. 'Oh great.' Darien muttered to himself. "What was that Darien?" Serena asked. "I said ...grape, I'd like some grape juice." He stuttered before looking down to the menu in his hands. Serena only nodded her head, the sadness washing over her again. The girls, Darien and Josh spent the rest of that afternoon talking about various subjects. Well, Darien was just listening. He stared angrily as Josh put an arm around Serena's shoulders carelessly and she didn't seemed to mind. 'If he doesn't get his hands off of her, I'm going to have to do it myself.' He thought bitterly. Then suddenly he caught himself with all these threats. 'Who am I kidding.' Not wanting to stay any longer, Darien cleared his throat and stood up. "I'd love to stay and chat, but I've got a class in thirty minutes." He lied. 'He doesn't have any classes today.' Mina thought with a knowing nod. Everyone pouted slightly. Darien looked down to Serena briefly before making his way out of the booth. "Maybe next time, Mina." He smiled slightly before leaving the arcade. He was gone, again. Serena sighed deeply as she watched after Darien. Everyone saw the expression on her face except Josh. "What did he mean 'maybe next time'?" Serena asked curiously. "Oh, it's really nothing. He was talking about the dance." At the mention of that, Serena shot up from her seat. "Is he going to the dance?" She asked. This time, the girls turned to look at her questioningly. "Why are you so uptight, Serena?" Ami timidly asked. Not wanting to answer that, Serena sat back down and smiled slightly at Josh. He only raised an eyebrow at her strange behavior. Never in his entire life did he ever considered taking Serena to a social event. But since the bet was a large sum of money, who'd pass up on the perfect opportunity? "I've got to go too. So, I'll pick you up at seven?" Josh asked and slid his arm affectionately around Serena's shoulders. "Yeah. That's fine." She replied with a nod. The girls just watched on as he carelessly flirted with her. Minutes later, the only people left in the booth were Mina and Serena. Mina watched Serena wonderingly for a moment before speaking up. "You know Serena. No one has ever been able to go out with Josh. I heard that last year, on Valentine's Day, every girl on the cheerleading squad were begging to be his. You're pretty lucky." Serena shrugged slightly and sighed. "I don't really like him, Mina. I mean it might sound selfish. But the only reason I said yes was because I didn't want to show up without a date. That'd be too humiliating." Mina had to giggle. "So who do you really like?" She asked Serena carefully. "Me? Don't be silly. I'm sick of guys. No one is decent enough to treat a girl the right way. And they're all a bunch of immature jackasses." Serena had said that a little too loud because people were turning in their seats to look at the two blondes strangely. "You're right. I mean girls like us deserve to be treated like a lady and not just some high schooler." Mina declared. "That's why I love my Andrew so much. He treats me so good." She smiled with a long sigh. "You're the lucky one, Mina. I wish I had someone right now. With Sammy sick, and mom and dad so busy, it's hard to be happy. Sometimes I've got to put up an act because I don't want to worry them. They've got enough things to deal with, let alone a depressed daughter." Mina nodded understandingly. "I know things are tough for you right now and I think you're handling this way better than I would ever be able to. Just don't give up and I know everything will get better. You have my word on it." Serena looked up with tears in her eyes, but smiled softly at her best friend. "Thanks, Mina. I really needed to hear that." "So much for renting a tuxedo. Serena's going with someone else." Darien sighed deeply as he carelessly tossed the black tuxedo on his bed. He had spent all afternoon finding the perfect one, and then turned out that he won't be taking her. With another sigh, he walked into the kitchen to pour himself something to drink. The phone suddenly ringed on the stand, pulling him momentarily back to reality. "Hello?" "Hi, Darien?" "Hey Mina." Mina paused for a few seconds before speaking again. "I know you're upset Darien and I'm sorry you had to see that. But I just talked to Serena and she told me that she doesn't have any feelings for Josh. You should still come to the dance with us. Maybe then you can ask her to dance and show her just how much you two..." "No." Darien stopped her. "Why?" Mina asked wonderingly. "There's no way that anything will ever happen between us. She probably hates me. We were never really friends to start with." This time, it took Mina a while to respond. "Listen to me, Darien. I know for a fact that there is no one else Serena would rather go to the dance with. Please, I'm begging you. Just go to her house and ask her. Show her how much you care...and then..." "Fine, fine. I'll do it ok? Are you happy now?" Darien rolled his eyes in annoyance. Mina smiled into the phone. "Good. Now go before you loose your nerves." She commanded. It brought a chuckle to Darien's lips as he shook his head at her. "When did you become so interested in my personal life?" He questioned wonderingly. "Hm, maybe I'm just watching out for you like the many times you did for me in the past." She replied sincerely. "Thanks. I don't know how I could have made it all these years without friends like you." Darien smiled. "I know you would have made it with or without me. Now, lets see. Serena loves roses. But she hates it when people give her too many. I suggest only one solitaire rose bud. She'll go crazy when she sees it. I guarantee you." Mina advised. "Roses, huh?" Darien repeated thoughtfully. Maybe there was a chance for him after all. "This is no big deal. Just asking Meatball Head to a dance. Everybody does it..." Darien muttered to himself as he walked down the sidewalk toward Serena's house. He decided to walk since it was a breezy day. It also cleared his mind a little. "2203, 2205, 2207..." He glanced down at the piece of sticky note in his hand and realized that he had arrived in front of her house. "It's now or never." Walking up the steps slowly, Darien coughed and quickly ran a hand through his hair. This was so much easier when Mina was planning it. Taking a deep breath, he knocked on the door. After a moment of waiting, Darien was greeted by a lady in her late thirties. "I don't believe I was expecting company today." She smiled before opening up the door a little more wider. "Oh...um...I'm looking for Serena Tsukino. Do I have the right house?" Darien asked nervously. The woman looked up to him skeptically before nodding her head. "Serena's not home right now. I think she's somewhere with Josh. Do you want me to page her?" She asked. Darien sighed inwardly as his fists tightened at the thought of Josh. "No...no that's ok. I'll just come back later. Good bye." Just as he turned to leave, Irene stopped him. "Wait!" She hollered and rushed down the front porch steps. "Is... is that for her?" She asked curiously, her gaze traveling down to the rose in his hand. Darien looked down and smiled slightly. "Yeah...it was." Irene smiled gently as she looked into Darien's saddened eyes. "Would you like for me to give that to her when she comes back? I'm sure she'll love it." She asked. Darien seemed perplexed for a few moments before finally looking up. He smiled. "Please, just tell her it was from a friend, and that I hope she has a sweet Valentines." Every word he spoke, a part of him died. Was he really that much in love with her? Irene nodded understandingly before extending out her hand. The rose set gently in her hands as Darien smiled with a sigh. "May I have your name?" She asked when he turned away. "I'd much prefer Serena not knowing. It's probably better this way." He replied. Irene chuckled. "A secret admirer?" She asked wonderingly. Darien only shrugged before walking down the steps and onto the sidewalk. He waved goodbye once more and turned to walk away. Darien sighed deeply as he walked slowly down the street. He looked up when someone suddenly ran into him. "I'm sorry! I didn't see you!" The girl apologized. "It's alright." He chuckled before continuing his walk. Maybe it was instinct or something, but he turned to glance back at her. She had a pretty disposition about her, with shoulder length black hair and a pair of the most beautiful gray eyes he has ever seen in his entire life. Maybe he was dreaming. No one can ever be more beautiful than Serena. But atlas, he was entranced. "Wait!" He called out unexpectedly. She stopped in her tracks and slowly turned to face him. "Yes?" She replied with a smile. Darien took in a deep breath as her sweet voice ranged through his head. This couldn't possibly be happening. He was supposed to be in love with Serena. "You...you have the most bewitching eyes." Darien told her softly before he could stop himself. "Oh!" She gasped in slight surprise. "Thank you...um..." "Darien." He answered her as he stepped closer. "My name is Emily." She smiled charmingly up to him. Picking up her hand, Darien laid a small kiss on her soft skin. When he looked back to her eyes again, a part of him disappeared. It was gone, just like that. "You...don't do this to every stranger you meet, do you?" Emily asked with a giggle. Darien grinned lopsidedly. "No, just you." He replied. "Maybe you'd like to join me..." "I'd love to." She answered before he even got the question out. "I have a great idea. Do you know the Valentine's dance tomorrow night at Juuban Hall?" She asked. "Why yes. I am going...alone that is..." He smiled when she dug into her purse, looking for something. "My father ...Dr. Hiroshi is a sponsor of the event, and I think..." "Dr. Hiroshi? Dr. Alexander Hiroshi?" Darien asked in awe. "Yes. Why?" Emily looked up to him questioning. "He is my professor." He chuckled. "Really? You're in med. School then? Were you at the convention last year in Nagano?" She asked. "Yes, I was there. Your father is amazing. He knows just about everything." Hearing that made her giggle. "That's what he wants you to think." "Really?" They spent the rest of that hour just walking and talking. She was pleasant, smart, sophisticated and not to mention beautiful. And slowly, Darien was starting to forget about Serena. But still that part of him was missing. Whatever it was, he was determined that Emily would replace it. "Mom! I'm home! Did anyone call?" Irene popped her head out from behind the wall. "No honey!" She replied before rushing to the oven. Shrugging slightly, Serena made her way up to her room. "What a day wasted!" She shook her head as she remembered her "date" with Josh. The more time she spent with him, the more immature he seemed. Suddenly something on her dresser caught her eye. She walked up to it wonderingly before picking up the glass vase with the single red rose. Part of her thought her mother must be just decorating for Valentine's Day. But somehow she knew that there was more to it than that. Slightly confused, Serena rushed down the stairs with the vase in her hand. She walked into the kitchen to find her mother busily cooking. "Mom, did you get this?" She asked. Irene turned around briefly before going back to cutting vegetables and boiling water. "Uh...ya." She replied absentmindedly, obviously not paying much attention. "Oh, ok." Serena turned away, slightly disappointed. So this Valentine's Day is going to be depressing. She had imagined thousands of times that someone would bring her a single rose and sweep her off her feet. She couldn't help but be a hopeless romantic. "Romance! Ha!" Serena sighed as she tossed the rose into her trash. "How overrated." With that, the unshed tears finally fell from her saddened eyes. The end! Just joking. Looks like this isn't going to be a one part story after all. I had wanted to finish this story and send it in before Valentine's Day. But as you can see, it's a little too late for that. I've decided just now to make this into another series. I guess I'm not good writing short stories. I always come up with another idea and then it's like "Ah well, I'll just add this in here." And so it goes on and the next thing I know, it's a four chapter story. So, just ignore what I said at the top. Oh right, Part of You and Me. Well...to tell you the truth, I'm going to abandon that for a while. I just don't have the time right now to really put all my efforts into it. And I hate revising stories. It drives me nuts! Well, anyway, hope you guys had a romantic Valentine's Day. I know I did. My boyfriend was so sweet. He gave me a gold heart bracelet! I almost fainted when he surprised me with it and a single red rose. <>. Anyway, e-mail me when you have the time! I'd love to here from you. See ya. <3 Blue
