The greenish-blonde haired woman turned to look at her youngest daughter. Her strange child, who had inheirited neither her father's bluish black hair, nor her mother's tones, but seemed to combine them both, in her black hair with its green highlights. "Yes, Perse?" she replied gently. The thirteen year old girl seemd to stare at the ground for a long moment. "Where did we come from?" she finally asked, not lifting her eyes. Her mother's brow creased in an unaccustomed frown. "I thought I had explained it to you a while ago?" "You did ... but I'd like to hear it again, because I've been thinking about some things ..." Her mother sighed ruefully. That was another thing she couldn't figure out -- where the girl had gotten her strange curiousity that led to her poking into everything. Ancestors knew, neither she nor her mate had given it to her. "A long time ago, before you were born ... your mama lived up among the stars. But there was a war among the stars, and eventually your mama came to hide here, on this world." Her voice caught, and it was all she could do to not start crying as furiously as she had in the first few hours after she had realized what had happened to her. How she had been tricked. "A lot of people ... heroes ... gave up everything so that your mama and your papa could be safe, here. Someday, when you're older, I'll tell you their names." "But anyway, it was on this world that I met your papa. Actually, I met him on the moon, and we came here only a little while after that. And then ... after we figured out some things ... your brother Patty was born, and soon after your sister Rabby. And then, a few months after the bright starfall, you were born. And ... that's it, really." Her youngest daughter lifted her head to look at her with those red eyes that reminded her so much of ... somebody. "There's more that you're not telling me, isn't there?" she asked ... no, it was more like an accusation. "Well ..." She started to press her fingers together. "There's a lot of things that you wouldn't understand because you've never seen them, and I don't really know how to explain them ... but that really is honestly the heart of the story." Her daughter nodded and went back to looking at the ground. Her mother realized that she hadn't asked what her daughter was thinking about. She did so. "Do you remember ... what happened a while back? When Rabby started to ... bleed?" Her mother blinked. And then she saw all. "You mean that you've ..." Her daughter nodded once, quickly. "Oh my." That was when her daughter began to cry. And so her mother did the only thing that she knew to do. She held open her arms, let her youngest child snuggled into her embrace, and began to sing a song she had sung to her children very often over the years. "Cosmic child ... Cosmic child ... Looking for shining stars So wonderful tonight ..." * * * Whence came Pluto? She was present at the very beginning of the Silver Millenium, and the legends of the Nine have vague legends of a green-haired "warrior of magic" who appeared in moments of dire peril to aid the forces of righteousness (such as they were, before the Enlightenment of Serenity) against those who served the Elder Darkness. It is truly a sad thing that we, the Chroniclers of Her Majesty's Court, must admit that we are unable to determine the background of an individual who is a public figure -- although a seldom seen public figure, to be sure. One would think that we could simply ask her. And we intended to, but on the day we arrived at the intention, a letter arrived for us, which text, with the kind permission of its author, we have included herein. "Don't. It will open up more cans of worms than you're ready to deal with." Pluto. Who are we to argue with her Ladyship? from "The Official Chronicles of the Court of Serenity, Queen of the Kingdom of the Moon, Overlord of the Silver Millenium Alliance," compiled Queen's Year 854. "I'm older than you are, Endymion. A great deal older. And that's all I'm going to say. Pluto, when asked. * * * Sailor Moon was created by Naoko Takeuchi, and brought to North America by DiC.
